Limited to 2000 copies, hardback in dustwrapper. 29.5 × 23cm, 199pp. The Ramayana is a Sanskrit epic from ancient India, thought to have been written between the 8th and 4th centuries BCE. Edinburgh: Thomas Adams and Sons, 1890. 1st Edition . Paperback. Good / Fair. Undated, c1890. First edition, paperback with printed titling to front cover. 18 × 12cm, 108pp. A rare early title of a Scottish detective's memoirs of his investigations at Musselburgh's racecourse and written in the vernacular. The preface reads "this little volume makes no pretence to literary style. It is the simple narration of incidents in the career of a constable. They are drawn from memory, and were gathered together in moments of leisure as the scenes and characters vividly flashed across my mind. There is no fiction embodied in these pages, nor do they contain the record of blood-curdling, sensational incidents. They point, I trust, the moral that the path of the wrongdoer is beset with pitfalls, and that the way to escape from the filthy cesspool of disease and crime, is to tread surely the way of honesty and truthfulness." Condition: The paper covers are worn with a small amount of loss… Read More

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1987. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good. First edition. Hardback in tan cloth with printed titling to spine and upper board. 22.5 × 14cm, 171pp. While Rider Haggard's stories have been popular with several generations of readers, this was the first study to examine the place of Empire in his writing and to draw out its related political and literary implications. Dr Katz argues that the romance adventure carried an ideological burden for Haggard and that he was one of a number of imperial-minded writers - among them R. L. Stevenson, Andrew Lang, W. E. Henley and Kipling - who shared a similar world-view and certain literary traits. The book includes a biographical sketch focusing on Haggard's experiences in the Transvaal in the later 1870s and early 1880s, and his association with South Africa throughout his life; a description of the imperial background, with particular attention paid to the imperial emphasis on leadership and heroism; an… Read More

Small hardback bound in green cloth with printed titling to spine and upper board. 19 × 12.5cm, 251pp. Quite a scarce copy of this novel, which was adapted from a play of the same name. The central theme is the moral justification of strikes by bodies of specialised workers. Set in a large urban area that is dependant on a single line of railway, a doctor is supplying food to the area during a railway strike. The doctor is murdered, a child dies from diptheria, and the local doctors strike by deciding not to attend any of the strikers or their families. The strike leader's wife then needs an immediate operation, and two doctors relent. but meanwhile the strike has ended with a compromise behind the strike leaders' backs. The authors wrote that they were not propagandists for socialism, bolshevism or established institutions, and their aim is to suggest points for reflection. Condition: A fair copy.
