This is the autobiography of Alfred Capper, a drawing-room entertainer of the late Victorian and Edwardian age. His act including some magic, and he referred to himself as a "thought-reader" who specialised in muscle-reading (apparently a form of thought reading). He toured extensively, was anti-spiritualist in nature and his acts were considered informative and educational. He was knocked down by a taxi in Paris in 1921 and died instantly. Condition: A good copy. The cloth biding is a little marked and faded, with some bumping to the corners. The first volume in the Collection de Chansons et de Contes Populaires series published by Leroux, this book collects together Greek folk tales, translated from the original source. The author, Emile Legrand, was a French Hellenist and chair at the School of Oriental Languages in Paris. Condition: A good copy. The binding is secure and in good order. There is some light and occasional foxing to the page edges and the book has a slightly musty aroma but is in otherwise good shape.

A collection of extracts taken from the preface of the Italian typographer, type-designer, compositor, and printer Giambatista Bodoni's Il Manuale tipografico (The Manual of Typography), first published by his widow in 1813. Condition: The covers are a little tanned and rubbed, the contents in good order bar a few small spots of foxing.

Hardback, bound in brown cloth with printed titling to upper board. 19 × 12.5cm, 187pp. An early edition of the register of Aldenham School in Hertfordshire. The book contains a history of the school, followed by lists of masters and pupils, school societies and sports, Aldenhamians abroad etc. The details are very scant from the school's earliest days but pick up from the early Victorian era. Among those listed as past pupils are the sculptor Alfred Gilbert, and William Sumner Hammersley, the co-founder of Australian Rules Football. An interesting record. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age.

The memoirs of William Russell Young who spent fifty-five years in South America (Chile and Peru) working for, among others, the bank Huth & Co in the late nineteenth, early twentieth century. The memoirs seem to have been written down as they occurred to him but are vaguely chronological, and talk about the society, sports, events, weather etc. Condition: Fair condition. There is a heavy water stain to the front and rear board running from the top. The inner binding is a little pulled in places and the pages tanned, however, it remains in strong readable condition.

The dustwrapper is quite heavily worn and rubbed but it is complete.

Published by the National Army Museum in 1994, this book commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the artist's death and is illustrated throughout with his art, letters and sketches. 2. Rex Whistler, The Triumph of Fancy by Stephen Calloway. Published by Brighton Art Gallery in 2006 to accompany an exhibition of Rex Whistler's art, this book catalogues some of his work from childhood through to the 1940s. Condition: A scarce first edition but in fair to good condition only. The blue cloth is rubbed to the corners, with heavier wear to the joints and spine ends. The book lacks the ffep but the main body of text is in good order with clean pages and secure binding.

Hardback, bound in the original cloth with gilt titling to spine. 19.5 × 11.5cm, 160pp. Cornelius Cayley (1727-1779) was an English religious writer and preacher. As a young man he lived beyond his means until, under the influence of James Hervey he started attending the Tabernacle at Moorfields, after which he had visions of death. The early death of one his brothers after such a vision and hearing George Whitefield preach in 1751 led to a conversion experience. This account was first published in 1757. Condition: A reading copy. The boards are rubbed and bumped, and the ffep is badly crinkled but the main body of text is in good, strong readable condition. Previous owner's name to title page.

The central theme is the moral justification of strikes by bodies of specialised workers. Set in a large urban area that is dependant on a single line of railway, a doctor is supplying food to the area during a railway strike. The doctor is murdered, a child dies from diptheria, and the local doctors strike by deciding not to attend any of the strikers or their families. The strike leader's wife then needs an immediate operation, and two doctors relent. but meanwhile the strike has ended with a compromise behind the strike leaders' backs.
