Description:
New York: High Awareness, Inc, 1992. Very good. Poster measuring 23¾" x 18". Very good with scattered light creases. This is a large calendar meant to bring awareness of the history of slavery, as well as lynchings in the United States. The days of the calendar are in columns at opposite edges of the poster, with three large illustrations in the middle. The illustrations depict the process of enslaving Africans, with visceral drawings of the capturing of new slaves, the middle passage, and breaking camp. Interestingly, in the breaking camp image, a young man is being whipped and the aggressor is also Black. At the bottom of the poster are two columns of text which detail the lynchings which are highlighted in red on the calendar. In between those columns is text dedicating the poster to Ida B. Wells whose early investigative journalism led to the topic of lynchings becoming part of the national conversation. A searing reminder of slavery and lynching. OCLC locates no copies.

Description:
[Pine Bluff, Arkansas]: [Supreme Union of Ethiopia], 1917. Good. 6¼" x 4 5/8". Stapled wrappers. Pp. 23 + cipher card laid in. Good: light vertical crease to wrappers and all leaves, some internal soil spots; owner notation to title page; offsetting to pages where card laid in. This is an exceptionally rare ritual book for a little-known African American fraternal/benevolent society. While its text is fairly plain and standard for the genre, the book is evidence of one woman's effort to build a Black benevolent society and/or defraud its members. The book lays out instructions for conducting the rituals bestowing first, second and third degrees onto members of the Supreme Union of Ethiopia [SUR]. Using public records and newspapers.com this seemingly anonymous organization springs to life with a fascinating history. SUR was also known by at least two other names: the Ethiopian Union of the World [EUW] and the Grand United Order of Ethiopia [GUOE]. The group's Arkansas Articles of Incorporation…

Description:
Chicago: The House of Knowledge, 1975. Very good. 11½" x 14". Stapled self-wrappers. pp. [48]. Very good with minimal wear and light dust soiling. This is a Black history book, bound like a calendar and published by The House of Knowledge which was created by F.H.Hammurabi Robb, an African American attorney who toured the country (and ultimately the world) speaking on Black history. He also wrote and published on the subject under both the imprint here as well as The Century Service Exchange. The building that housed his businesses on South Michigan Boulevard in Chicago was later used as the first home for the DuSable Museum of African American history. This is another book by Robb which is devoted entirely to African history, tracing it to modern African Americans and encouraging pride in the long history. Each page is an explosion of textual and visual factoids, with occasional narrative text interspersed. Entire pages are devoted to Nigeria, Ethiopia, civilization in the Nile valley, alphabets…

Chicago: The House of Knowledge, 1975. Very good +. 11 ½" x 14". Stapled self-wrappers. pp. [60]. Very good plus: wrappers with light staining/dust soiling, internally clean and bright throughout. This is a Black history calendar published by The House of Knowledge which was created by F.H.Hammurabi Robb, an African American attorney who toured the country (and ultimately the world) speaking on Black history. He also wrote and published on the subject under both the imprint here as well as The Century Service Exchange. The building that housed his businesses on South Michigan Boulevard in Chicago was later used as the first home for the DuSable Museum of African American history. This is the 1974/1975 edition of Robb's "calendar." It has many pages of facts and some narrative text, all related to African and African American history and uplift. This particular edition has reading lists on African history, a section on "Black Authors, Triumphs and Failures," and promotions for travel to Africa…

Description:
Chicago: The House of Knowledge, 1974. Very good. 11" x 14". Stapled self-wrappers. pp. [32]. Very good due to staining of wrappers at edges and and old price in ballpoint on front cover; internally near fine. The book contains reams of data regarding Black history as well as African Americans in Chicago. Each page takes awhile to absorb because of the slapdash approach to layout with images and text calling for attention on numerous spots of each page. OCLC locates no copies.
