Inscribed on title page by Raphael Soyer (1899-1987): "For Sandra and Kitaj in friendship and admiration, Raphael." Additionally the list of paintings is inscribed "We hope to see you both again soon, R. S." American artists R. B. Kitaj (1932-2007) and his second wife Sandra Fisher were friends of Raphael Soyer and also the subject of at least 1 double portrait painted by Soyer. In 2 places in the catalogue Soyer has penned a critique of the color reproduction of his work.

Internally fine with no foxing or stains, though some offsetting to text and plates.. 4 volumes; original full polished calf with morocco lettering pieces; xvi, 267; xi, 280; xii, 296; xi, 367 pp. Illustrated with 65 folding copperplate engravings. Each volume with half-title giving the specific content for the volume, thus: v. 1. Arithmetical and mechanical experiments -- v. 2. Experiments in optics, chromatics and acoustics -- v. 3. Electrical and magnetical experiments -- v. 4. Experiments in pneumatics, hydrology, and pyrotechnics, with an appendix of miscellaneous recreations. The first volume including a large section devoted to "recreations" utilizing playing cards.

Green cloth with title and cover decoration in red and dark purple, octavo, 328 pp. First Finnish language translation of one of London's darkest tales, a fictional account of the bloody end of American democracy. Octavo, original burgundy cloth; 303 pp., frontispiece and 8 plates with tissue guards. First English translation of the French text originally published in London in 1702. This copy with the Barnes & Noble dustjacket, as described in Clark and Brunet #151: "In 1940 Barnes and Noble purchased 461 copies at one-half cost. A dust jacket was prepared . . . at the bottom of the [jacket] front cover and spine 'Barnes & Noble, Inc. is printed." Total edition was 966 copies.

NY: Collier's , 1914. First edition, first printing. Moderately worn with fairly inoffensives dampstain at edges, short tears.. Original pictorial wrappers; 10.5 x 15 inches. Profusely illustrated, mostly from photographs by James H. Hare. Jack London contracted with Collier's to cover this phase of the Mexican Revolution at a rate of $1100 per week. Accompanying London's text are photographs by Collier's staff photographer James H. Hare. The series ran to 7 issues, which were not collected in book form until 1970 (Jack London Reports).

Original gray cloth with pictorial paper inset on front cover, octavo (7 x 9.5 inches), 131pp. Color illustrations by Wesley Dennis. A superb copy of this classic tale.

Fine in moderately worn glassine jacket. 112 pp., 25 sepia-toned photographic plates, oblong quarto, original natural linen cloth over boards, pictorial inset on front cover. At time of publication only 26 copies of the 1884 original Cherry edition of Redwood and lumbering were known to exist, of which "no two contain the same illustrations." Peter Palmquist has selected the 25 most striking images from the original editions to reproduce here, together with a catalogue of all the images. Designed and printed by James Robertson at the Yolla Bolly Press in a limited edition of 600 copies.

Some stains and scuffing to covers, spine darkened, owner names to front free endpaper, else very good. Scarce first edition of this frequently reprinted text on the art of war. Author was "Director of Military Education in India." This the copy of Charles E. G. Norton, 7th Hussars, with his autograph dated 1895 to front free endpaper. Norton was a Captain in 1895 and promoted to Major in 1903. The 7th "Queen's Own" Hussars were in service in India from 1886-1895. Bookseller's stamp "A. J. Combridge & Co., Bombay" to front fixed endpaper.

Issued in decorative clamshell box covered in gray checkered Japanese paper; portfolio bound in same material, text in English and Japanese with 10 text pages and 10 illustrations on facing pages printed on one side of a continuous strip folded accordion style to make 22 leaves (including title and colophon) and attached at the end to the decorative cover. Colophon reads: "Numbers is a book dealing with phonetics. This book was designed and printed on a handmade Japanese paper, of eleven silkscreen prints by Seiko Tachibana at SFAI printmaking studio in April, 1994. The Japanese characters are handwritten by the artist. The English words are typewritten. This proof was hand bound by the artist." Signed by the artist and numbered 17/20.
