Description:
St. Petersburg, Florida, 1960. Advertising card, 23 x 15 cm., printed on both sides on stiff card stock, stapled to a flat wooden stick, allowing for its use as a fan. Recto shows four black & white photo illustrations of two little boys, one African-American, one white, making use of the pectoral plaster. Each photo illustration has a caption title: "Put the Plaster over the Pain;" "Cures lames back;" "Prevents Pneumonia;" "Takes the Ache." The white child places the plaster on the African-American child's back, on his chest, and on his abdomen. In the last photo, the African American child is eating a large slice of watermelon. One additional smaller photo at the base of the card shows the boys side by side. On the verso is the text of an ad for a Florida druggist: Webb City Drug Store, St. Petersburg, FLA., Owner "Doc" J.E. Webb. Claims for the pectoral plaster are repeated, presumably ironically, and in bold letters the racist statement: "It Will Not Make Black White." "Fanning" the flames of… Read more

Description:
Gutersloh, Germany: Gutersloher Verlagshaus Gerd Mohn, 1961. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. 308 pp. pp. Original cloth (a trifle dusty). NOT ex-library! The definitive, critical biography of Johannes Zwick (ca. 1496-1542) who with his brother Konrad, and Ambrosius and Thomas Blarer, implemented the Reformation in Constance and "deputized" other brothers in other communities. Zwick is one of the most famous Protestant reformers from Constance; he matriculated at the University of Freiburg where he associated with Bruno and Basilius Amerbach. In 1518, the year he was ordained, Zwick went for three years to Italy in order to continue his studies; the became familiar with the "causa Lutheri" and received the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque in Siena 1521. Next he taught at the University of Basel where he joined the local circle of humanists, which included Erasmus. Zwick soon embraced the Reformation after reading Martin Luther, and preached the Protestant doctrine in a parish in Riedlingen from 1522… Read more

Washington DC: The Folger Shakespeare Library, 2001. Softcover. Very Good. Quarto, 158 pages, illustrated in black and white. Through the underlinings, emendations, and other marginalia common to early modern readers, this title shows the variety of ways in which readers have related to books over the centuries. Albany: Charles Van Benthuysen, 1865. First Edition. Fair. 8vo. 70 pp. Original paper wrappers, browned with age-spots throughout, small chips along the edges, large chip on bottom of back wrapper, back wrapper covered in (nonsensical?) mathematical scribbles. The important "Willard Report," issued at the zenith of the American Civil War, on the often deplorable conditions of the insane poor in institutions throughout New York State. This, the so-called "Willard Report," had a significant impact on improving said conditions, not only in New York but beyond. Sylvester D. Willard, M.D. (1825-1865) was a volunteer surgeon during the Civil War, best known as the founder of the Willard Asylum for the Insane. Shortly after he began his practice, he became connected with the Albany County Medical Society and served successively as its secretary, vice-president, and… Read more

Description:
Basileae (Basel): Thomas Guarinus, 1575. First Edition. Small 4to. [8], 185, [23] pp. Modern vellum, red and white mottled edges. Old shelf-mark (?) "4069" in ink on title. Light foxing throughout. Overall very good. "All Things Burgundian." This early and impressive Renaissance chronicle of Burgundy covers the years 408 to 1482 and presents key events in tabular form. That copies of this work were in the libraries of Isaac Newton (cf. John Harrison, No. H1687) and Horace Walpole (Strawberry Hill sale, 26 April 1842, Case E, group lot 8) attests to its significance. According to the author, the present work was composed with the aid of hitherto unpublished manuscripts; among these must have been the Chronica Regum Visigothorum or Leges Visigothorum: in the list of authors and "monumental works" consulted is the reference to the "Vuisigothorii (sic) Chronicon manuscriptum." "The only writer who dealt with the later history in a really critical spirit was Nicolas Vignier (1530-96), whose critical… Read more
