Description:
Cloth-backed color map. Some staining to cloth, which shows lightly through to the map.> 31" x 52.5"This map "was specifically commissioned by the War Department to provide current information about southern railroads. The map's significance for military intelligence was recorded in a note written by the cartographer's widow...She recalled that the map was displayed in Secretary Stanton's War Office, where black and red pins were used to locate the varying positions of the two armies, and that the map proved very useful to General Sherman in his march through Georgia to the sea. Mrs. Kimber concluded by stating her husband was a Quaker 'and to ease his conscience for having prepared such a map at all he declined any payment for it.'" (Norman B. Description:
London: Leonard Smithers, 1896. Hardcover. Very Good. Beardsley, Aubrey. Designed by Aubrey Beardsley with his initials to front cover. Hardcover with beveled boards, full blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt design to front cover, 9-3/8" tall, 48 pp., nine illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. Wear to spine ends with 1/8" tear to bottom of front joint, moderate wear to tips, moderate rubbing to gilt on front cover, foxing to text pages, especially to first several pages. Aubrey Beardsley's cover shows a clear distinction between his skills in illustration and design. The illustrations in this work are intricate, highly detailed, and free flowing. In contrast, the cover is symmetrical and formal, and quite within the poster art style which was in its heyday in the 1890s. In both styles, Beardsley succeeds; although the florid erotic drawings might be better known, this cover is a brilliant example of the poster art design.

Hong Kong: Local Printing Press, 1954. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Pictorial tan cloth, 4to, 111 pages, black and white illustrations; faint wear to extremities, ownership inscription in front free endpaper. A very nice copy. This has "Fandango Fiesta Legend" & ox decoration to rear cover--I feel like the last time we had this, the rear board was undecorated, but can't find the photos to prove it. Written by an American woman whose husband accepted a job in Guam in 1950. She finds the culture and landscape quite pleasing and accepts a position as a home economics high school teacher. Maxwell discusses various aspects of the culture, including the strong Spanish influence, like the Fandango (wedding), fiesta, and the legend of the coconut. There are notes on the foods found in Guam and nutrition information sprinkled throughout. Recipe names are in Chamorro with English translation provided. The author has embraced the local cuisine and the recipes are authentic…

Description:
Hardcover, sewn binding, paper by David Carruthers and Company at St. Armand Papeterie, pinned fabric samples from artist's own collection. As a middle-aged woman, King is confronted with her lost youth one day. She digs through her closet of clothes from the 1960s and puts together a memoir in a series of brief sketches, which are illustrated, in a way, with fabric from her now-vintage clothing. A finely crafted artist's book with a distinct focus on how fashion can be integral to memory.

Description:
Idaho, 1950. Soft cover. Very Good. Blue paper covers with silver stenciled candle to front cover, mimeographed pages, 9" x 6", 20 single-sided pages. Special thanks to Chris Boyd of Boyd's Used and Rare Books for triangulating contributor names to identify Moscow, Idaho as the likely origin of this cookbook. Wear to yapped wraps, else very good. The most interesting contribution is for Nesselrode Pie. This pie was created in 1945 by New York baker Hortense Spier. The original recipe included pecans, but as others copied the recipe it (d)evolved into having chocolate flakes and maraschino cherries instead. The New York Times claimed in a 1988 article that, "while for years it was a popular American Christmas dessert, Nesselrode pie left our collective culinary consciousness about 30 years ago and has hardly been heard from since." (Dec. 7, 1988, Section C, Page 20.) The recipe included in this cookbook does indeed have chocolate flakes, meaning this was probably published in the late 1940s or 1950s.
