London: Punch, 1911. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "Return of the Parliament Bill.” appeared thus on p.65 of the 26 July 1911 issue of Punch. The artist is Edward Tennyson Reed. The cartoon is captioned "(A Vision suggested by a visit to the Russian Ballet at Covent Garden. - M.M. Nijinsky-Winston, Lloyd-Georgewitch, and Ivan Redmonski receive their old love Mme. Karsavina-Vetoloptoff after rather a poor time elsewhere)." This cartoon depicts Winston Churchill (as Nijinsky, the greatest male dancer of the early twentieth century), along with David Lloyd George and John Redmond as ballet dancers, approaching the Parliament Bill, repealing the House of Lords veto. Lloyd George and Winston Churchill draw their bows in a common offensive." In 1904, Churchill dramatically quit the Conservative Party to join the Liberals. Together, he and David Lloyd George served as the Liberal PartyÂ’s dynamic firebrands, serving for years together in the Cabinet and, when Lloyd George ascended to the premiership, Churchill serving under Lloyd George in a variety of Cabinet posts. The carton is captioned "'When at anchor here I ride | My bosom swells with pride | And I snap my fingers at the Fuehrer's taunts!' H.M.S. Pinafore up-to-date." Churchill had spent nearly the entirety of the 1930s in the political wilderness, out of power, out of favor, and frequently at odds with both his own Conservative Party and prevailing public sentiment. Description:
New York: George H. Doran, 1927. Numbered and limited issue of the first edition. Hardcover. Revolt in the Desert was the first and only version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for general availability to the public in T.E. LawrenceÂ’s lifetime. This is copy 101 of 250 of the publisher's limited issue of the first U.S. edition, hand-numbered thus on the limitation page. This is a better than near-fine, unread copy accompanied by the flawed and worn original dust jacket and slipcase. This is a large, handsome book. The volume measures 10.625 x 8.125 inches (30 x 20.6 cm), bound in heavy blue buckram with a brown leather spine label, gilt top edge, blue and yellow head and tail bands, and blue endpapers. The contents are printed on large sheets of laid paper with generous margins and untrimmed fore and bottom edges. The edition is profusely illustrated with 18 plates, 10 in color, the full-page color plates each preceded by a tissue guard printed with caption, the black and white plates each… Read More

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape Ltd., 1927. Numbered and limited issue of the first edition. Quarter leather. This is the English first, limited, and numbered edition of Revolt in the Desert - the first version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in LawrenceÂ’s lifetime. This limited edition was distinctly different from its English trade edition counterpart. The binding is larger and features quarter brown pigskin spine over brown buckram boards with a gilt rule transition. The extensively illustrated contents feature generous margins, untrimmed fore and bottom edges, gilt top edges, and green and yellow head and tail bands. The edition was limited to 315 copies. The large size of the volume was dictated by inclusion of colored plates from the 1926 SubscribersÂ’ edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. As a result, the text differs from the trade issue; “In order to justify the inclusion of some of the persons represented in the plates and otherwise mentioned in the text, a few extra… Read More

Description:
New York: George H. Doran, 1927. Second U.S. edition ("Gift Edition"). Hardcover. Revolt in the Desert is the only version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in LawrenceÂ’s lifetime. This is the second American edition – the so-called “Gift Edition” issued for the 1927 Christmas season. Although it resembles the English first edition in dust jacket, binding, and format, illustrations render this second American edition unique. The text contains 18 black and white line cuts from the famous 1926 SubscriberÂ’s edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom found in no other edition of Revolt in the Desert, and striking Kennington endpapers are also exclusive to this edition. Condition approaches near fine in a good plus dust jacket. The brown buckram binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with vivid spine gilt and only trivial shelf wear to the bottom edges. The contents are clean with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. All illustrations are intact, as are the Kennington… Read More

Description:
Melbourne & New York: George J. Hicks & Co. / Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1927. First "Australasian Edition". Hardcover. This Australasian issue of Revolt in the Desert is distinguished by the unique dust jacket. Australian publisher George J. Hicks & Co obtained second printing copies from the American publisher, Doran, which were then fitted with a “George J. Hicks & Co.” dust jacket. The second printing of the American first edition swiftly followed the first in 1927, differing only by absence of a small publisherÂ’s insignia on the copyright page and “Doubleday, Doran” rather than just “Doran” on the title page (the merger having occurred in 1927 after the first printing). As noted by OÂ’Brien (A107, p.83) “at least two copies of this later impression exist which have dust wrapper with George J. Hicks imprint on spine.” This is one such copy. The Australasian jacket is printed black on heavy, ribbed, tan paper featuring a front cover line drawing profile of Lawrence in Arab headdress, a… Read More

Description:
London: Conservative and Unionist Central Office, 1949. First edition. Pamphlet. This is the first and only edition of Winston ChurchillÂ’s speech of 23 July 1949. The 19-page, wire-stitched pamphlet bound in illustrated wraps measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches (21.6 x 14 cm) and is bound in coated paper wraps, the front cover with a photograph of Churchill addressing the crowd. Condition approaches very good. The fragile wraps binding remains complete. Both original binding staples are firmly intact with surface corrosion that has not stained the adjacent wraps. The wraps themselves show no loss or tears, despite light overall soiling and some wear and wrinkling to extremities, The contents are crisp and clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting or appreciable age-toning, marred only by a little creasing at the corners and fore edges. This is a partisan speech given at a mass rally for Conservatives in Wolverhampton on 23rd July 1949. Churchill was speaking as head of the Conservative… Read More

Description:
London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1905. Limited, numbered, finely-bound deluxe, signed edition. Vellum. This exceptional 1905 edition of Washington IrvingÂ’s classic tale was notably and lavishly illustrated by Arthur Rackham. This is not just an aesthetically arresting and highly collectable edition on its own merits, but represents both a stylistic and professional turning point for the celebrated illustrator who contributed his art and his signature to this edition. Rip van Winkle was the first book entirely illustrated by Rackham to be issued in a limited edition format and “established him as the leading decorative illustrator of the Edwardian period.” Indeed, it was owing to exhibit of RackhamÂ’s Rip van Winkle illustrations in Leicester Galleries, London, that “J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, commissioned Rackham to illustrate the first edition of his classic children's tale Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906)”. This editionÂ’s 250 copies were bound in illustrated vellum, lettered in… Read More

Description:
London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1933. Hardcover. This is the second printing of the bibliographically significant 1933 edition of Churchill's second book in the scarce early issue dust jacket. Originally published in 1899, The River War recounts Churchill's experiences and reflections concerning British involvement in the Sudan, including ChurchillÂ’s participation in “the last great British cavalry charge”. In 1933, a so-called "Second Cheap Edition" was made from plates of the 1902 edition with a bibliographically significant new introduction by the author explaining that "A generation has grown up which knows little of why we are in Egypt and the Sudan." There were ultimately five printings of this edition with at least seven different dust jackets issued (at least two for the 1933 second printing and two for the final, 1951 printing). The style of the illustrated first printing dust jacket was specific to the first printings (January 1933) and a limited number of second printings (March 1933),… Read More

Description:
London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1951. Hardcover. This is the final printing of the bibliographically important 1933 edition of Churchill's second published book, a very good plus copy in a very good plus dust jacket. Originally published in 1899, The River War recounts Churchill's experiences and reflections concerning British involvement in the Sudan, including ChurchillÂ’s participation in “the last great British cavalry charge”. The mustard-yellow cloth binding is tight with good color, bright spine gilt, sharp corners, and only light shelf wear to extremities. We note slight outward warping and a hint of mottling to the front cover. The contents are clean and bright with a crisp feel, no previous ownership marks, and no spotting. Differential toning of the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. This fifth impression dust jacket features dark yellow faces and spine, front cover illustrations, and print in red and dark blue. Unique to the… Read More

Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1902. Second (first one-volume) edition. Hardcover. This is the first one-volume edition of Churchill's second book, The River War, originally published as a two-volume edition in 1899. In 1902 Churchill (by then a new member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, adding a new Preface and excising much of the criticism of Kitchener for political reasons. For the next 120 years, every one of the many subsequent editions of The River War was based on this 1902 text. This first one-volume edition had only a single printing of 1,003 copies and is considerably scarcer than the first edition. This edition has the same distinctive gilt decoration of the Mahdi's Tomb and gunboat as the first edition, but is bound in red cloth (as opposed to the navy cloth of the first edition). While the original and unrestored binding of this copy is failing, it is noteworthy for relatively clean contents and for being an early issue. Two features distinguish this copy as likely an… Read More

Description:
London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1900. First edition, third and final printing. Hardcover. This is Volume II only of the first edition, third and final printing, a particularly clean and bright copy. The River War is Churchill's second published book, issued in two volumes, the lengthiest from his time as an itinerant cavalry officer and war correspondent during the waning days of Queen VictoriaÂ’s reign. This first edition is not only compellingly written, but also physically beautiful. The two large, lavish volumes are decorated with gilt representations of the Mahdi's tomb on the spines and a gunboat on the front covers. Each volume is printed on heavy paper with a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. This third and final printing is not only the scarcest issue of the first edition, but also the last unabridged issue to be published until 2020. All three printings of the first edition (2,646 copies total) are virtually identical, issued respectively in November 1899, February 1900, and… Read More

Description:
Norwalk, Connecticut: Easton Press, 2005. Full leather. This is the handsome, Easton Press, leather bound edition of Churchill's second book. The River War recounts the experiences and reflections of a young Winston Churchill – then still just an itinerant cavalry officer and war correspondent - concerning British involvement in the Sudan. This copy is in as-new condition, clearly unread with a stiff, fresh feel, ribbon marker still in the same position it was placed when bound. Laid in is the publisherÂ’s “CollectorÂ’s Notes” leaflet about The River War as an installment in the publisherÂ’s “The Leather-Bound Library of Military History” series. In 1883, Mahdist forces of messianic leader Mohammed Ahmed overwhelmed the Egyptian army of British commander William Hicks and Britain ordered withdrawal from the Sudan. In 1885, General Gordon famously lost his life in a doomed defense of Khartoum, where he had been sent to lead evacuation of Egyptian forces. Though the Mahdi died that same year,… Read More

London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This extraordinary first edition, first printing set of Churchill's second published work, the lengthiest from his time as an itinerant cavalry officer and war correspondent during the waning days of Queen VictoriaÂ’s reign, may be unique; this is not only the best-preserved set of which we are aware, but also perhaps the only surviving publisherÂ’s review set. The publisher presented this “advance copy” on a beautifully printed and hand-written on 8 x 5.125 inch (20.3 x 13 cm) slip of laid paper, hand-dated “Nov 1st” 1899 – five days prior to publication. The title, number of volumes, price, publication day and date, “Westminster Gazette” and embargo date are all written in the same hand. Printed at the center of the slip is the exhortation “This copy is sent to you on the distinct understanding that no notice of the book, reference to it, or extracts from it, will appear until the day of publication.” The… Read More
