Description:
Galisteo, New Mexico: Desert Rose Press, 1993. First Edition. Stiff paper wraps. Fine. William Slater. Small 8vo. Pp. 62. With spot illustrations by William Slater. Bound in illustrated stiff wrappers printed in black and red. Inscribed by Burke on the half-title page. A TLS from Burke is laid-in, reminiscing about collaboration with a poet-sculptor, along with a photocopy of the letter from the poet-sculptor to which Burke's letter replies. Inscription reads, "To -- -- with fond, fond memories. And El Gaia, too! Love, [signed] Cliff". Although Burke decamped for Galisteo, New Mexico, most of these poems address the sacredness of the region around the Skagit Valley, where the poet was associated with the 1970s bohemia of Fishtown. The exquisite illustrations by Skagit Valley artist William Slater (1939-2007) capture the essence of Burke's tone.

Georgetown, CA: The Talisman Press, 1964. Limited Edition. Fine. Fine. 4to. Pp. 285. Introduction; a list of sources; index. Endpaper plans of San Francisco, late -19th C. Printed paper-covered boards, with a half-cloth binding affixed with a mounted paper label. One of 1,000 copies printed. The editor has picked a fascinating and effective approach to transporting the reader to the San Francisco of the 1850s, e.g. this sample from September 30, 1850: "At some future period, when the site of San Francisco may be explored by generation ignorant of its history, it will take its place by the side of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and furnish many valuable relics to perplex the prying Antiquarian. Buried beneath the surface, there is already a stratum of artificial productions which the entombed cities of Italy cannot exhibit. Knives, forks, spoons, chisels, files and hardware of every description, gathered from the places of several conflagrations . . .." A lovely copy.

Description:
San Francisco: John Nugent, 1856. First Edition. Unbound. Good-. Block print illustrations. Each 4pp. Each with tri-fold creases, slight separation at uppermost fold, 2" in at margin. Rag paper newsprint. San Francisco of the '50s had more ships in the Bay than houses in town, and more saloons than either. Murder, arson, theft and corruption were the rule that "Herald" publisher John Nugent fought against, inspiring the Committee of Vigilance. Ads here reflect those heady times; how fun to ponder that the bivalves at Dan Driscoll's Oyster Bar might have migrated from Oysterville, W.T. Ads for express shipment of "treasure" to New York and Boston, indicating that fortunes in gold were still being created. A fascinating, primary-source look of dynamic San Francisco.
