With reproduction black-and-white frontispiece photograph of the author and a few other small decorations. Part of Short Story Index Reprint Series by this publisher. Clean, tight, and unworn, with library bookplate and inkstamp at inside front cover and unused "date due" slip and pocket strip affixed to rear endpaper. Faint spine sticker are of fade to cloth at lower spine/boards.

Dust jacket bright but with moderate edgewear and irregular long crease/tear at top rear panel, 1/2 chip at head of spine, and spine sticker.

With black-and-white illustrations. Text prepared under advices of Ernest Cummings Marriner , L.H.D. Colby College historian, who wrote the Foreword. READING COPY ONLY with all information present but with library marks (inkstamps etc.) and significant defects as follows: covers covered with clear contact paper; vinyl tape to spine; clear tape (browned) used to attach inside front cover to front endpaper. Vinyl tape attaching pp.6-7; spine pulling away from text block in spite of repairs. Pages 175-206 in one piece, detached from binding. Pages 207-251 are good copies of original pages, but loose (banded together) and not bound into book. Light soil and wear to front endpaper and title page, but remainder of intact text block and copied pages are clean and unworn.

The chapters "are addressed. . .to the average citizen and householder, and are intended rather as an incentive to the securing of good work than as a guide to the manner of its performance. . .largely devoted to the question of preventable disease. . ." Moderate rubbing of cover extremities, with 1/8" loss and fraying at head of spine and split threatening at upper front spine edge; tail of spine split horizontally 1/4" from base, but holding. Front hinge paper starting. Faint stains to front and rear boards. Dime-size light brown stain to title page and adjoining page. Interior clean and tight.

Uncommon hardcover edition of this charming story of Excalibur/Scally the dog, which was first printed in the "Saturday Evening Post," in June, 1914 (Curtis Publishing Company). Hay, the pen-anme for Beith (1876-1952) was a Scottish schoolmaster, novelist, and playright, better-known for his longer works of later years. Faint rubbing to cover extremities. Spine moderately sunned. Clean and tight.

New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1939 Good+ Long prose poem. Spine label partly rubbed, but intact; spine lettering present; spine slightly cocked; faint discoloration to cloth cover.
