On page two, there is some coverage of local news, including the arrest of Mr. Brown for building a fence on Merchant Street. The second page also includes some important editorial commentary about the upcoming presidential election. The importance to the Whig Party of standing behind some proposed laws, including the fugitive slave law, according to The Herald, would be important to their political fortunes.

8vo, modern cloth, includes Dickinson half title, 126, 158 pp. Lacks front flyleaf, half title chipped and torn at the edges, last leaf defective, with tape repairs, and some loss, some folded corners, foxing and browning throughout, some minor dampstaining; still a tight copy in a new binding. Jonathan Dickinson (1688-1747) was born in Hatfield, Massachusetts, and attended one of the earliest classes at Yale College, graduating in 1706. While there are not a lot of details of his early life, he did end up preaching to a group of New England Congregationalists in 1708 in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey. Although he accepted a blend of Puritan Calvinism theology, he was flexible enough to also accept "more contemporary experiences of evangelical revivalism." He advocated a 'lively faith', but took account of a person's age and intellectual development.Thomas Foxcroft (1697-1769) was born in Boston, and is known to have converted to Congregationalism while in college, graduating from Harvard in 1714.… Read More

Newspaper, large folded newsprint sheets, some ad illustration, 12 pp. Probably removed, paper is browned and brittle, but mostly intact, some small tears and chips at extremities, pages partially split at center fold, small hole in page of one article with loss of a letter or two, paper name label on front page covering a letter or two of the lead Titanic article, rubber stamp in upper right corner, not affecting text, front page indicates 22 pages, but there are only 12 with this paper, but it appears complete, and all the Titanic articles are in these pages.
While published about five days after the Titanic disaster, this paper is full of articles on the sinking. The lead article provides details on testimony of second officer Lightoller, which he gave to the American Congressional inquiry. However, there are many articles on the subject, and some of which appear to be the start of various Titanic legends and myths. Newspaper, folio sheets (16 1/2 x 21), 12 of 14 pages, illustrated, Vol. LXI., No. 153. Paper is browned and brittle, some chips at the edges and margins, probably removed, small label on first page, missing pages nine and ten, but article on the Titanic is complete and on the first page. This is one of the earlier newspaper accounts of the sinking of the Titanic. The article reports that the ship has struck an iceberg, and is reported sinking. It also reports that the women are being put off in lifeboats, and that the ship is 500 miles off Cape Race at 2 A.M. The report captures the drama of that moment by mentioning that signals from the ship stopped abruptly at 12:27 A.M., which was when the ship went down. Interestingly, this article also mentions the close call the Titanic had when it left Southampton earlier in that week and almost collided with the New York, which somehow got loose from its moorings as the Titanic departed.

Unclear when coloring was done, some tape repairs at fold on verso, some discoloration in bottom margin from tape, left margin about 1/2 inch (this is normal for this map), but other margins are ample, text on verso, some minor soiling, staining and browning; otherwise very good. Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was the founder of one of the great cartographic publishing dynasties, which produced some of the best maps of the period. This is very attractive early map showing part of Brabant in the Netherlands, and is centered on Brussels. Description:
8vo, paperback, glossy covers,157pp. Near fine condition. One of the most significant trends to emerge in popular culture in recent years has been the growing fascination with post-apocalyptic films. From films like Armageddonto World War Z, we have become preoccupied with the end of the world. The explosion of the output of these films over the past twenty years has been incredible. You cannot even turn on your TV without being chased by zombies, rogue meteors, or some kind of deadly virus. While the growing popularity of these films shouldn't be a surprise to anybody, the roots of this trend go far deeper and longer than most people realize. This post-apocalyptic film journey has actually gone on for more than 100 years. In Seeking the End: Post-Apocalyptic Films 1916-2016. Part of the discussion includes coverage of the very first film of this genre, a silent Danish film called The End of the World(Verdens Undergang). More recent films that are part of this journey are Cell, These Final Hours… Read More

Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, 173, [1] pp. Removed, some aging, foxing throughout, heavy in some places, slight soiling; otherwise in good to very good condition. The American Colonization Society was formed in 1816 by John Randolph, Henry Clay and Richard Lee. Daniel Webster, Henry Rutgers, and Francis Scott Key are listed as officials of this group in the pamphlet. This movement was part of a back to Africa process that would help ensure greater freedom for free African Americans. Around 1821, the American Colonization Society helped establish a colony in Liberia for that purpose. While some critics felt there were racist motives behind this movement, many blacks felt that having a separate place to live was the only way to avoid the discrimination they faced. A hundred years later, Marcus Gravey would make the same case, and start another back to Africa movement. Slaverynorth website. Denison website.
