Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1995. First edition of Roth's second National Book Award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Philip Roth on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Milton Glaser. Mickey Sabbath, the hero of the novel makes a concerted effort to be bad. Like Alexander Portnoy, the famously self-abusing character in Roth's 1969 novel Portnoy's Complaint, Sabbath has an appetite for "acts of exhibitionism, voyeurism, fetishism, auto-eroticism and oral coitus." But while Portnoy's antics were usually comical and liberating, Sabbath often feels imprisoned by his own acts of self-indulgence. Though his frantic pursuit of sex is a desperate attempt to abate his anxieties about death, it only serves to obliterate any semblance of real life he could have had. A great work...Roth's richest, most rewarding novel, funny and profound, as powerful as writing can be" (The New York Times Book Review).

Description:
Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd., [1941]. The historic secret Atlantic Conference was held between August 9th and 12th, 1941 on a warship anchored in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. At that momentous meeting, the two leaders and their military aides agreed upon critical policies for the conduct of a joint war against Germany, even though the U.S. was still officially neutral and would remain so until December 8. The meetings culminated in the Atlantic Charter, a declaration of principles issued a few days after the conference. Often compared to Wilson's Fourteen Points, the Charter also laid the foundation for the United Nations Declaration, signed by 26 nations in January 1942.

Description:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1936. T. S. Eliot, discussing Shaw's Saint Joan after its premiere in London in 1924, wrote that although Saint Joan was not the masterpiece that some claimed it to be, the play "seems to illustrate Mr. Shaw's mind more clearly than anything he has written before." Shaw wrote in the preface to the published text, "There are no villains in the piece. Crime, like disease, is not interesting: it is something to be done away with by general consent, and that is all [there is] about it. It is what men do at their best, with good intentions, and what normal men and women find that they must and will do in spite of their intentions, that really concern us."

Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1935. First edition of Kent's boldly illustrated account of his visit to Greenland. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with over eighty illustrations by Rockwell Kent. Very good in a good dust jacket. Ownership inscription. Salamina, the story of his years in Greenland, is Rockwell Kent's longest and richest book. Probably Kent's best painting has been done in Greenland; for he found it an ideal place to work. The setting was amazingly beautiful; the native people became his close friends and welcomed him, unreservedly, into the community life. His story of his years there is a true chronicle of may curious and romantic happenings, and a narrative which, in style and in richly varied content, reflects perfectly the remote and beautiful world of North Greenland.

New York: The Whitney Museum of American Art and Pace Editions, 1971. The primary subject of Lucas Samaras' photographic work is his self-image, often shown distorted. He has worked with multi-media collages, manipulating the wet dyes in Polaroid photographic film to create what he calls "Photo-Transformations". Likewise, Samaras constructed rooms that contained elements from his own personal history, and he described his "Auto-Interviews" as "self-investigatory" interviews in the form of text works.

Description:
Glen Ridge, New Jersey: Thomas Horton and Company, 1973. First edition of this collection of writings by the Nobel Prize-winning economist. Octavo, original blue cloth. In very good condition. Signed and dated by Paul Samuelson on the title page. Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics, the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for having written considerable parts of economic theory, and he is one of the ten Nobel Prize winning economists still signing the Economist's statement opposing the Bush tax cuts. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came, in part, from his mentor, polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics, Willard Gibbs.
