Description:
London: Methuen, [1920].. 12mo. Cloth. Heavily worn and shaken, with surface chips from spine and scattered incompletely erased doodles and drawings in the text. First edition. A very interesting association copy, formerly the property of American novelist Nathanael West. West's ownership inscription appears at the top edge of the front free endsheet: "N. West 1926 Paris." West visited Paris shortly after his hair's- breadth graduation from Brown University and stayed for only a few months (sources vary). While there he pursued the literary life, adopted his name change from Weinstein to West, and began work on what was to eventually appear as THE DREAM LIFE OF BALSO SNELL. Page 61 has some heavy pencil underscores and marginal highlighting, and page 70 has three lines of barely visible, partially erased text in pencil. Most interesting are the many partially erased remnants of drawings and doodles in several blank margins, the rear free endsheet, and the title and half-title, which may just possibly… Read More

Description:
London: Etchells & Macdonald, 1926.. Quarto. Cream linen spine and orange cloth over boards, stamped in gilt. Faint dust soiling to spine, trace of normal offsetting to endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine copy in lightly worn slipcase. First edition. Introduction and captions to the illustrations by Bernard Windeler. Illustrated with twenty-three original copper engravings by Wadsworth, printed from the plates, both full-page and vignette, and some delicately handcolored. One of four hundred and fifty copies. Wadsworth was, of course, one of the original signators to the Vorticist manifesto and regrettably that tradition shows through only occasionally and briefly in these draftsman-like renderings. Of particular interest to this cataloguer is the probability that the author of the captions is the same B.C. Windeler whose ELIMUS, with illustrations by Dorothy Shakespear, was published in Pound's INQUEST series three years earlier.

New York: Printed by John Buel, 1793.. xvi,[6],192pp. plus folding table. 12mo. Contemporary unlettered calf. Portrait laid down on front pastedown, wanting terminal blank S6, some tanning and foxing to preliminary and terminal leaves, still a very good or somewhat better copy. Denoted "The Latest Edition," but one of several 18th century printings in North America of this standard work by the cleric and educator. While the well-known frontis is neatly affixed to the pastedown, it is thus preserved, and the folding table "of Converging Series" is intact and unsullied. Two prefatory poems, "To Mr. Thomas Dilworth, on his Compendium of Arithmetic, Intitled The Schoolmaster's Assistant" by Moses Brown, and "To Mr. Thomas Dilworth, on his Schoolmaster's Assistant," by William Deane, are printed in the front matter. Description:
London: Printed for J. Roberts, 1731.. [4],viii,48pp. Octavo. Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume. Terminal signature G neatly detached, otherwise a very good copy, with the half- title. First edition, of a sort, as ESTC indicates that "copies are made up with sheets of at least two impressions and at least two editions randomly mixed." THE CRAFTSMAN was an anti-Whig British newspaper which operated from 1726 to 1752. Established by Lord Bolingbroke and William Pulteney, it was edited by Nicholas Amhurst under the pseudonym "Caleb D'Anvers." Yonge was an advocate of Walpole and was consequently appointed commissioner of the Treasury in 1724. This is his widely circulated sortie on the Whig side into an extended pamphlet controversy over the paper's attacks. Kress attributes the extended dedication to Baron Hervey. ESTC T47414.
