Spine has been sunned and dulled with three closed tears to crown; heel is moderately worn. Boards somewhat soiled with lightly bumped cornors. Internally, there is a stamp on ffep and bookplate on fpep. Bottom edge uncut with catalogue partially unopened. About very good. [Edel & Laurence A55.b].

Limited edition; this is one of 900 numbered copies printed on pur fil teinte, from an edition of 1000. Etched portrait frontispiece. 131 pp. Octavo, signatures sewn and glued into printed paper wrappers; however, the glue has dried and crumbled, and the bookblock is very nearly detached. A bit of sunning at spine, and foxing to upper wrapper and fore margin of frontispiece, else clean. Very good overall.

A good copy only, in that the front hinge is externally cracked and chipping, spine ends are quite worn and end papers foxed; internally clean and bright with only light foxing. (BAL 12049).

1946. [SKETCH TOUR GENRE] NAKAZAWA Hiromitsu, artist. SAIGOKU SAN-JU^-SAN-SHO JUNREI EMAKI. Kyoto, Kanao Bun'endo^, publisher. Sho^wa 21 [1946]. Oblong folio of o^ban size woodblock prints after designs by Hiromitsu, detailing the famous pilgrimage sites (and sights) in western Japan. The blocks were cut by Okada Seijiro^ and the printers were Nishimura Kumakichi and Takagi Kiyomitsu. This portfolio project was initially completed and printed in 1925. This edition, printed from the same blocks at the very end of Kanao's life, was obviously issued as a companion piece to the THIRTY-SIX VIEWS OF OSAKA, which Kanao also published in 1946. The colors of the original 1925 edition were quite a bit more light and "crumbly" than the bolder colors used in this printing, which accord with that used in the Osaka series. (I personally like this bolder approach to Hiromitsu's work.) 1915. [DESIGN] Saikasha. SAIKA. Tokyo 1924-9. 30 issues bound into 10 volumes (out of 36 issues bound in 12 volumes). Significant run of the SAIKA series which captured Japanese and Asian design in all its manifestations - objects, utensils. fabrics, rugs, architectural elements, lacquerware, cloisonnee etc., etc. There is a total of approximately 500 plates, of which about 100 are color woodblock printed and another dozen or so are color collotypes and color lithographs. The remainder are collotypes and offset. An interesting series, from the reference library of the Mitsukoshi Department Store. Two of the volumes are disbound with a few plates missing, but they have the original covers. Sold with all faults, and priced accordingly. Unusual set.

Large 8vo., boards, 15, 2, 9, 488pp. A bibliographical survey of Saikaku's works. Very unusual. Wormed on the spine, this is a working copy only, with some internal browning.

[DESIGN]. SAIKOKYU MIRAAKOOTO-KAMI TOPPAN-ZURI OODAMATCHI MIHONCHO NP, ND [Japan, 1960s?]. 16.3 X 24.5 cm. Leatheroid covers, 23 pages of 5.5 x 8 cm designs for matchbox covers, done in a "mirrorcoat" process of relief printing. One sample clipped for color matching. The back covers is loosening. Overall, a good copy of this very scarce and ephemeral catalogue.

Hinges are starting to weaken, else bright and fresh inside and out. Near fine, in a tired dust jacket that is price-clipped as well as clipped at bottom front flap, affecting the last few lines of copy.

Ex-library with usual markings. Brown coated endpapers have bookplate, pencil ownership. A few pale spots to cloth, inkstamp to title page, else clean. Howes and Clark describe the first issue as having 62 pp. and 23 engraved views; this edition does not include the engravings. Very good overall.

Leather corners removed. Spines and corners shelfworn, boards rubbed. Paper quality is such that edges are toned with a few small chips and closed tears to edges. Occasional shallow dampstaining in Tome Premier. Portugal, the Orient, India.

FLTD. (STEVENS, Wallace). THE SAINT NICHOLAS SOCIETY of the City of New York. (New York): [N.P.], 1945. One of 1000 #'d copies. First appearance of "Tradition" by Stevens. In complying with a request of the society he composed it to celebrate the 100th Paas Festival. OPUS POSTHUMOUS reprinted the poem with changes. This title also contains Stevens "Genealogical Record" which traces his ancestors on both sides to the 17th c. This is a near fine copy in orange cloth without a dust jacket, probably as issued. 1923. [WOODBLOCK PRINTING] CLAUDEL, Paul. SAINTEGENEVIEVE Poeme Par Paul Claudel. Tokio, Chinchiocha, A.D. 1923. #610 of 1000cc. Tall folding album, 32.5 x 13.5 cm, bound in paulownia wood [kiri]. An illustration by Tomita Keisen and a page reproducing Claudel's script were cut into woodblocks by the master Igami Bonkotsu, as well as the title design by Noemi Pernessin and a series of text illustrations by Audrey Parr. The rest of the text, which is entirely in French, is typeset. A lovely French-Japanese collaboration, created at the moment that Tokyo was crushed by earthquake and fire. In the original publisher's clasped chitsu case. Near fine.
