New York: Harper & Brothers, 1961   ¶ "FIRST EDITION" of this influential survey; including remarks on Burmann, Wright, and the Spanish lipogrammatists, with a paragraph from Gadsby (1939) on page 48. The latter, we note, was already such a rare book that Pierce was obliged to quote from it at second hand, never having seen a copy himself. (We also note that Pierce's secondhand quotation is more accurate than the second edition of Gadsby 2004, which -- for example -- 'corrects' Wright's spelling "carolling" in chapter 1.)  (Series: Harper modern science series; edited by James R.
