Description:
San Francisco: North Point Press, 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Original cloth, spine gilt, in pictorial dust jacket. Warmly inscribed and signed, "Rennie," by the author with his caricature self-portrait drawn both beside the signature and in the book's fore-edge. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Six early "passion pieces" by Lawrence Weschler, "stories of people merely going about their everyday lives, when suddenly they seem to catch fire, becoming utterly obsessed and ending up somewhere entirely different from where they thought they were headed" (publisher's jacket description). The essays include portraits of English teacher Akumal Ramachander and reclusive painter Harold Shapinsky, cartoonist Art Spiegelman, Danish cheese exporter-turned-museum founder Knud Jensen, bookseller Leonard Durso, Russian avant garde conductor-turned-lexicographer Nicloas Sloniminsky, and artist J. S. G. Boggs (the creator and spender of his own paper currency about… Read more

Description:
Paris: Fr. Horth-hemels, 1730. Hardcover. Very good. [10],246 pp. plus frontispiece and two folding tables. In Latin. Early three-quarter vellum and speckled paper over boards, raised bands, manuscript paper title and shelf labels. Early shelf number inscription in front free endpaper, light institutional inkstamp in title page. Lightly rubbed, extremities worn. Very good. George Ernest Stahl’s influential Latin edition of Gideon Harvey’s ARS CURANDI MORBOS EXPECTATIONE (first published in English in 1689). Stahl published both ARS CURANDI and his own critical response, ARS SANANDI CUM EXPECTATIONE, with a combined title page under the heading, SILENI ALCIBIADIS. The present example corresponds with Waller 4082: Harvey’s work alone, issued with the combined title and without a separate ARS CURANDI title leaf. Gideon Harvey (ca. 1640 – ca. 1700) served as physician to Charles II and “physician of the tower” to William and Mary. Despite his connection to the… Read more

Description:
New York: [Privately published], 1995. First Edition. Softcover. Fine. 11 x 8 1/2 inches. [4] leaves (printed recto only). Red printed wrappers, side stapled. Original horizontal fold, else fine. Three New York City-based concretist poems by Eli Wilentz (1918-1995), photocopied from his own manuscripts and privately issued by his family on the occasion of his death. Wilentz founded the legendary Eighth Street Bookshop with his brother Ted in 1947 and owned and operated it until 1979. It was a center of the Beat scene in the 1950s and 1960s - "the very hearthside of hip, the cynosure of cool," as the NEW YORK TIMES called it in Wilentz's obituary. The shop provided a critical meeting space in New York to struggling poets and avant-garde authors, a daring commitment to stocking paperback books and mimeo publications, and, eventually, a publishing arm, Corinth Books. Wilentz had major interests in sculpture, architecture, and the literary geography of New York City, all of which… Read more

Institutional blindstamp and withdrawal inkstamp of American Antiquarian Society in title page. Wrappers moderately rubbed and worn, lightly chipped along yapped edges, rear wrapper unevenly sunned. Contents clean. Very good. A scarce copy of an unusual investigation, reprinting and commenting on the 1847-1848 correspondence between Macaulay, Peel, and Stanhope printed in London in 1860 under the title, WERE HUMAN SACRIFICES IN USE AMONG THE ROMANS? Stanhope had introduced the topic to Macaulay and Peel after reading a passage in Johann Karl Ludwig Gieseler's recently published COMPENDIUM OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY. Gieseler had cited Lactantius to argue that, as late as the third century C.E., an annual human sacrifice to Jupiter Latialis was made in Rome. Macaulay disagreed with Gieseler's translation (particularly of the particle, "siquidem") and… Read more
