Description:
Portland, Maine: Thomas B. Mosher, 1904. Second edition in Old Word Series. Printed flex boards, as issued. Fine. Thomas Maitland Cleland. Limited ot 925 copies. ________ The preface is by John Ruskin. Mosher never clearly identified from which edition he reprinted: the British or the American edition of 1883. Since copyright problems were most likely avoidable by reprinting the British edition, it most likely was the G. Allen edition (Sunnyside, Orpington, Kent, 1883). ________ The portrait frontispiece is by the author, Francesca Alexander, the American artist who spent much of her life in Italy, befriended John Ruskin, and published much of her work in the 1880's and 90's. She died in 1917. ________ Based upon stylistic evidence, the cover design is most likely by Frederic Goudy. ________ See Bishop's Thomas Bird Mosher--Pirate Prince of Publishers, entry 73. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Private Press.
