Profusely illustrated with black & white and color images (some folding). A wealthy of information on the state of pure and practical sciences at the turn of the 19th, and into the beginning of the 20th centuries. Very HANDSOME SET with startlingly clear gilt design. Limited ot 925 copies. ________ The preface is by John Ruskin. Mosher never clearly identified from which edition he reprinted: the British or the American edition of 1883. Since copyright problems were most likely avoidable by reprinting the British edition, it most likely was the G. Allen edition (Sunnyside, Orpington, Kent, 1883). ________ The portrait frontispiece is by the author, Francesca Alexander, the American artist who spent much of her life in Italy, befriended John Ruskin, and published much of her work in the 1880's and 90's.
