1954. Oil painting on board. 250 x 297 mm. (9 3/4 x 11 3/4 inches). Signed in lower left corner in black paint and in black ink an inscription reads "Santa Monica, Calif. / A. Dahl 1954". Label of Wallace Gallery, East Hampton, New York. Anton Dahl (1894-1967), Swedish painter who emigrated to the States and taught at the Detroit Museum of Art in the 1940's. In 1948 he moved to Los Angeles where he continued his teaching career at the Los Angeles Art Institute and lived in the Highland Park section of the city. It was while at LAAI that he produced this painting of the Santa Monica Pier set against a rich blue sky and calm ocean, with the earth tones of the beach in the foreground. Signed in the lower left.

Oblong 4to.  180 x 250 mm., [7 ¼ x 9 ½ inches].  Engraved frontispiece of Valerio Boschi, engraved title-page with an image of the city of Bologna in the background, 2 pp. engraved dedications, 33 engraved plates of countryside villas, landscapes, and country scenes from the environs surrounding Bologna.  Bound in contemporary decorated paper wrappers, spine reinforced with old repair, edges rubbed, fore edges of paper brown with age, margins foxed.  With faults a rare survival. Small 4to.  212 x 148 mm., (8 ½ x 6 inches).  Engraved title-page, 31 leaves.  Illustrated with an engraved title, within an ornamental boarder designed and engraved by Gasparo Gaiani.  Bound in contemporary Italian mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, red edges, red peppermint striped endpapers, beautifully preserved. Fine copy of the only edition of Parozzi's poems.  A rare collection of 26 love poems, some on true love, other on unrequited love, and other on the disappointed that come with the refusal of one's love.  Other poems discuss love in terms of flattery, sincerity, despair, jealousy, dreams of love, the seasons of love, happiness, thunderstorms as a metaphor for stormy love affairs, the gift of love, and sorrow that comes with the abandonment of love.  This appears to be Parozzi's only published collection of poems. New York: Printed for the Booksellers, 1836. 12mo.  145 x 95 mm., [5 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches].  288 pp.  25 full-page woodcut illustrations, a few on colored paper, plus woodcuts in the text.  Publisher's embossed black leather gift book binding; joints cracked yet sound, head of spine chipped; some scattered foxing throughout.Anonymously published book of humor and jokes that appeared to be an Annual Gift Book publication, with edition printed in 1834, 1836 and 1837 according to OCLC.  Wood engravings are also anonymous, many offering a moral lesson and others quite dark in their humor.  Cut in the style, but without the skill of Thomas Bewick. Not cited in Sinclair Hamilton, Early American Book Illustration  or Murrell, History of American Graphic Humor.   OCLC cites 8 copies of the 1836 edition.

Boston: F. Minot, 1834. 12mo. 140 x 100 mm. (5 3/4 x 4 inches). [6], 31 pp. Contemporary binding of marbled paper over boards with red leather spine. Corners rubbed. Front hinge completely separated and back hinge very loose. Spine cracked. Instructions for a memory game to help children learn the names of people in the Bible. Correct answers garner "counters" or points and those points transfer into sugar plums. This small volume is dedicated to Mrs. Eliza Farrar with "sentiments of affection and respect." Farrar (1791-1870) spent most of her adult life in Boston and wrote books for children, her most popular work being a book of advice The Young Lady's Friend published in 1836. It's possible this anonymously published scripture game was written by Farrar's friend Eliza Follen. Follen, a noted abolitionist, came from a prominent Boston family and also wrote for children, taking a particular interest in religious instruction. Kimnach" on front pastedown and the 19th century signature of John Clarke dated 1848. Rogers with the compliments of the author." First edition. Written about 25 years after his experience as a Argonaut in California, Stillman's account is both authentic and very valuable as a document of the experience of miner's like himself who wrote home describing the trials, tribulations, and triumphs that were experience by this enterprising group of men in the 1850's. In Padova: Presso Pietro Bandolese, 1790.  Small 8vo.  iv, 182, 2 pp. 8vo.  Contemporary paper wrappers, soiled, spine reinforced at an early date; an otherwise fresh, uncut and unopened copy with large margins. Very good copy of the second edition, published the same year as the first.  It is revised and enlarged by Jacopo Morelli (see his publications below), the noted Venetian librarian and scholar of 15th-century printing.  Burgassi's work was considered the most sophisticated bibliography of the Aldine Press published to date.  It is a   descriptive catalogue of imprints arranged chronologically from 1494 to 1595, with a list of titles that appeared without publication dates and an alphabetical index.  It is based on research that he conducted in the library of Cardinal Lomenie de Brienne which contained a rich collection of Venetian printing in the 15th and 16th centuries.  When Burgassi's book first appeared, Renouard decided to abandon his own plans to write a bibliography of the… Read More

[8 x 5 ¼ inches].  19 pp. Stitched as issued; some soiling to the title-page and edges a bit fragile.  Exhibition catalogues featuring the paintings and sculpture by American and European masters, with an emphasis on the works of Academy members.  The catalogue is organized geographically by spaces in the Philadelphia Academy.  There is a statement at the beginning of the catalogue which states that "those numbers marked thus * are to be disposed of."  This is the first time I have seen a catalogue listing items to be deaccessioned.

Waynesville, North Carolina: United Methodist Church, 1979. 8vo.  220 x 150 mm., [9 x 5 3/4 inches].  [iv], 138 pp.  Illustrated with a map of Sicily and half tone photos of the Sicilian landscape.  Original cloth, dust jacket; some staining to front wrapper.  This copy with an inscription reading " To Honey and Jim/ With Love from/ Bob/ Christmas, 1979.  This is probably by the author. First edition.  Robert Brooks, former Dean of Williams College, edited the "personal narrative of S. V. Ravi`, a Capuchin monk and Roman priest, born in a mountain village of Sicily, who left the Catholic Church, was excommunicated by the Pope, became an eloquent orator at the climax of the Italian Risorgimento, found the Methodist Church in Rome, and was buried in a mountain village in Vermont." .
