Description:
Tokyo: Chikura Shobo, 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. A Japanese literary critic and novelist comments on American life based on a year-long tour of the country, visiting Japanese American communities during the Great Depression. Kimura and two friends pooled their money and bought a Ford, ultimately putting 15,000 miles on the odometer before selling it for most of what they paid initially. Kimura, while not (apparently) a Communist, was definitely a sympathizer and much of his commentary discusses the radical left in the United States. One chapter is devoted to American views on the Japanese socialist Katayama Sen. Other chapters consider Leon Trotsky and Upton Sinclair. [2], 5, [1], 3, [1], 374, [8] pages OCLC: 673327595 (National Diet Library). First edition (first printing). A very good copy in the publisher's light green cloth-covered boards printed with a skyscraper design. Probably lacking either a dust jacket, a publisher's box, or both.

(N.-pl.): US Army Corps of Engineers, 1881. Ephemera. Near fine. A cabinet view albumen silver print of erosion and bank protection improvements on the Missouri River near St. Charles, Missouri. The image depicts the river and a line of A-frame supports with wire and branches below the waterline to stop debris flows during the rainy season. Two Black men sit in the foreground, one in a canoe and the other seated on the river bank. They may be the photographer's assistants, as a case with a handle is visible in the canoe. The caption of the photograph continues, "Missouri River improvements, St. Charles, Mo. Main Dyke, 3,600 Feet. Cross-Dykes, 2,000 Feet-July, 1881." This view was published as an engraving in the Annual Report of the Chief Engineers, United States Army, to the Secretary of War, for the Year 1882. Part II, following page 1678. Over several decades in the late 19th century the Army Corps of Engineers experimented with many systems to keep the Missouri River channel open. In November…

Description:
[Monterey, CA?], 1900. A lovely commercially produced (though likely in small quantities) album of colorful preserved marine algae specimens mounted on six leaves of cardstock and enclosed within thin sections of whale vertebrae. The algae samples are beautifully arranged and still have brilliant color. The bone front cover has a hollowed-out center lined with cardstock with specimens mounted in the center. The rear cover is a solid piece of bone. The binding is seWn with a green silk ribbon. An exceptional example of a specimen book, both well preserved and beautiful. The book has 17 mounted specimens inside plus two or three on the cover; the interior specimens are numbered in pencil and keyed to a 23-name list of species mounted to the rear pastedown. This specimen book appears complete; the books were likely assembled based on the available "sea moss" and likely varied from copy to copy. A short printed note about whaling in old Monterey, where whale bones were so plentiful they were used as…
