Description:
560mm x 400mm in total each leaf with remains of a double column, 41 lines in a fine rounded early Gothic hand; verso of first leaf much scuffed with remains of a large initial 'C' Italy, C12th. and when Christ departed bodily, not only the Holy Spirit, but also the Father and the Son, was present to them spiritually. for if Christ departed from them in such a way that instead of him, the Holy Spirit would not be with him in them, where is his promise saying: behold, I am with you until the end of the age; and: Shall I and the Father come to him, and make our abode with him, since healso promised to send the Holy Spirit so that he would be with them for eternity? and because of this, since they were of carnal or animal origin, they were to become spiritual, surely they would have been more capable of having father and son and the holy spirit. But in no one is it to be believed that the Father is without the Son and the Holy Spirit, or the Father and the Son without the Holy Spirit, or the Son without… Read More

Description:
St. Paul in a historiated initial on a leaf from an illuminated choirbook, on vellum [northern Italy (perhaps Milan), c.1500]single leaf, 559mm. by 340mm., with a large historiated initial 'S' (probably opening "Scio cui credidi ..." the Psalm for the Night Office on the Feast of St. Peter, 29 June), 75mm. high, in pink with blue background heightened with scrolling white penwork, and green, blue and red acanthus-leaf sprays and bezant, all on burnished gold ground, 5 lines of text with music on a 4-line red stave, ink eating through individual letters in places, slight cockling, else good, nineteenth- or early twentieth-century frame. This is a detailed and well executed miniature. The skill in the portrayal of the saint's beard, his calm and benign facial features, and engaging gaze straight out of the picture towards his viewer, find close parallels in the work of Lombardic artists of the early sixteenth century, such as the so-called Master B.F (see D'Ancona, Wildenstein Collection, 1970,… Read More

A saint or a brute. The certain necessity and excellency of holiness &c. So plainly proved, and urgently applyed as by the blessing of God may convince and save the miserable, impenitent, ungodly sensualists if they will not let the Devil hinder them from a sober and serious reading and considering.
