Description:
Middletown, Connecticut: Wesleyan Univ. Press, 1959. 56 pages. First printing of Wright's relatively scarce second book. The title poem is a sonnet that makes clear this comment by poet and critic Ben Friedlander: "One does not turn to James Wright for laughter." The poem begins: "When I went out to kill myself, I caught a pack of hoodlums beating up a man." After this book Wright eschewed the use of rhyme, but the dark themes stayed with him. The book is in better than very good condition: clean and tight, with Just a hint of toning to spine; toning to endpapers, with previous owner's name/city/state written on ffep. A smattering of foxing to top and fore edges of textblock. DJ is toned, especially at spine; hint of soiling to front and rear; in new mylar. Three sections: Lunar Changes, A Sequence of Love Poems, The Part Nearest Home.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good+/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

London: Various Publishers, 1786. 4to (10 3/8" by 8 3/8"). Clay decided to move on to Kentucky; Dixon remained in Abingdon. Robert W. Hughes (1821-1901) was a newspaper editor in Richmond, United States attorney in the Abingdon area, a Federal judge, and a Republican nominee for Governor of Virginia. His son Robert M. Hughes (1855-1940) was a Norfolk attorney, the author of a biography of Civil War general Joseph E. Johnston, and benefactor of what later became Old Dominion University (Hughes Hall on the ODU campus is named after him). Chapbooks bound-in include: 1) One chapbook containing 3 poems by 18th century lawyer and poet Thomas Spring: 1) A Familiar Epistle from a Student of the Middle Temple, London, to His Friend in Dublin. Description:
Various Publishers, 1835. 60 pieces of sheet music on 160 leaves gathered in a bound volume (3/4 leather over marbled paper-covered boards). Folio. On the front cover is a leather patch stamped with the name of the original owner of this collection--Scota Ann Warden. Interestingly, published in the August 1940 issue of Evergreen: A Monthly Magazine of New and Popular Tales and Poetry is original music for The Lexington Waltz, "COMPOSED AND ARRANGED FOR THE PIANO-FORTE, AND DEDICATED TO MISS SCOTA ANN WARDEN, OF STAUNTON, VIRGINIA--BY M. H. D." Pencilled on the front free endpaper is some poetry, very likely written as a tribute to Miss Warden. It is signed only with the words Ann Smith Academy, which was a private school for "young ladies" in Lexington, Virginia. Scota Ann Warden probably was one of the 90 or so girls (most between 13 and 16 years old) in the academy in 1839. Eight (8) of the pieces of sheet music have title pages with lithographed images, but lithography…

London: William S. Orr & Co., 1848. This is not a complete book--it is a single sheet containing an original antique hand-colored botanical print. Joseph Paxton was perhaps the most significant 19th century English botanist, the designer of the famed Crystal Palace, and the editor of Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants. This print is from the 14th volume of that magazine, published in 1848. Drawn and lithographed by Samuel Holden, it is a superb brilliantly-colored example of the flowers in the magazine. The print is clean and bright, with a hint of toning of the background and the usual stab holes along the binding edge.. First Edition. Paper. Collectible-Fine. Illus. by Samuel Holden. 9" by 6 3/8". Green River, Wyoming: R. E. Prince, 1969. 268 pages. 4to. First printing. Laid in is an errata sheet dated 1-22-1971. On the front endpaper is the dated (May2, 1974) signature of the book's previous owner: Manfred W. "Casey" Holtzinger, the Virginia Beach artist noted for watercolors of trains. This is a typical Richard E. Prince railroad history: an in-depth, highly detailed, and profusely illustrated history of the Seaboard Air Line Railway, "The Progressive Railway of the South," from its beginnings as the Portsmouth & Roanoke Rail Road in 1832-1834. Equally typical is that the book was published in a small edition which collectors tend to hoard; so it is reasonably scarce. The book is in about very good condition: internallyclean and tight, with very slight toning of pages and some soiling and rubbing of covers.. First Edition. Hardcover. New York: Frank J. Lowe, 1945. Edition limited to 250 impressions. SIGNED in pencil by Roland Clark. Image is 14 1/4 inches by 18 1/4 inches. Sheet is 22 3/4 inches by 28 1/2 inches. Archivally matted and shrink-wrapped--ready for a 26 3/8" X 29 1/2"frame. Frank Lowe worked for Derrydale, which produced Clark's hand-colored prints. When Derrydale went out of business, Lowe began to produce the same high quality prints for the artist. The print is in fine condition: clean and bright. "Seclusion" seldom comes on the market, and when it does, the paper usually is toned and the colors almost always are dulled and subdued. Neither of those issues applies to the print offered her. Note: the distortion in my photographs is an artifact of glare from the shrinkwrap.. SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Fine. Illus. by Roland Clark. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Description:
Fairfax, VA: Hazel/Peterson Companies, 1987. v, 112; iv, 31; iii, 34 pages. As part of its effort to build a shopping mall on the William Center Tract next to the Manassas Battlefield National Park, the Hazel/Peterson Companies commissioned historian James A. Schaefer to prepare a report on the Civil War Battle of Second Manassas. His report is part one of this book. In 1988 Schaeffer, having realized that he had been duped by Hazel/Peterson, reversed his position and joined the opposition to the mall. Part 2 of the book, "Counting the Fallen", was written by James Rea; it attempts to determine whether soldiers killed in the battle were buried on the Williams Center tract. Part 3 examines the history of Theophile Poilpot's long-missing panorama painting of the battle. The book, intended only for the local campaign to build the mall, was not widely circulated and is now scarce. The book is clean and tight.. First Edition. Paperback. Oxford, England: Basil Blackwell, 1929. vi, 37 pages. First half of the book includes lyrics to popular ballads by the English composer Maurice Besly. The remainder of the book includes humorous epigrams about famous musicians and writers. Some of the epigrams are accompanied by the superb caricatures of the Swedish artist Einar Nerman. Very SCARCE: OCLC locates only 7 copies in libraries worldwide. SIGNED by Besly on the title page, with an inscription on the front endpaper from the author to "Baroness de Bush" (Pauline Joran, the noted opera singer who married William Ernest Bush, the first and last Baron de Bush). The book is in very good condition: tight, with some soiling to cover, moderate wear to corners, and minor foxing in margins of title page and a few other pages. Much nicer than it sounds--certainly a more than acceptable copy for the serious collector.. SIGNED. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Illus. by Einar Nerman. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
