Vienna: Kaiserlich-koniglichen Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, 1889. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Large 4to. (28 x 22 cm). xii, 604 pp. With 2 chromolithographs of local costume, plus over 250 illustrations of views, scenes, art, pagan rituals and folk customs and costume, sacred architecture, domestic architecture, flora and fauna, jewelry, and much more. GLOWINGLY BRIGHT both internally and externally. Original publisher's gold cloth, elaborately embossed and gilt. A beautiful copy. "Upper Austria and Salzburg" from the famous "Osterreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild" series, complete sets of which are now unobtainable. Initiated in 1883 and largely compiled by the Crown Prince Rudolf himself, the entire work extended to 24 volumes (1885-1902). Ultimately the series contained a total of 12,596 text pages, 4529 illustrations, and 587 different articles, of which 432 were written by co-contributors. Description:
Paris: In MS: "M. Navarre résidant à l'ile Bourbon, de retour pour la seconde fois des Indes; a receuilly (sic) ces pièces à Paris en d[ernier]e année 1774, pour Mr. Desarnod son amy, 1774. Very good. Sammelband containing a MS title-page, and 18 printed works foliated 5-138, 2-4 (see below), 139-320. At end: MS contents leaf enumerating the "Ordre des pieces renfermes dans ce Recueil." Contemporary French mottled calf (worn), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Very good condition. Sammelband of "all" the legal tracts concerning the sensational lawsuits between Pierre de Beaumarchais and his nemesis, Magistrate Goezman. Our volume features 18 such tracts (sic). Unusually, the MS title-page gives the name of the compiler (one M. Navarre who had lately returned from the West Indies for the second time) who created the Sammelband on behalf of his friend M. Desarnod, in the same year that all the tracts were published, namely 1774. Beaumarchais, the… Read more

Description:
[Edinburgh], 1703. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. Together two volumes, small quarto. 12 pp., COMPLETE. Stitched in old blue paper wrappers at a recent date. Contemporary (or near-contemporary) author attributions in ink on title-pages, faint blind-stamps on first and final leaves of both pamphlets. BOTH editions of Sinclair's pamphlet recommending Scottish parliamentary reform, such as a triennial act, as well as toleration for dissent. The pamphlet demonstrates a royalist thread in Country discourse that can be linked to Episcopalian interests. Two editions appeared in 1703, both sina loca (but Edinburgh). The first edition is ESTC T57077. The second edition is distinguished by the title: 'Some thoughts *upon* the present state of affairs' (ESTC T155643). Priority is here established for the first time, afforded by careful examination of both editions side-by-side; it seems probable that ESTC T155643 was printed from ESTC T57077: compare the catchword on p. 2: in ESTC T155643 this catchword… Read more

Description:
London: Printed for J. Hindmarsh, 1691. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Small quarto: [2], 106 pp. Bound in modern half calf antique over marbled boards, old wrappers bound in at end (upper wrapper with early booksellers description and evidence of previous library shelf-marks). Some dust soiling. DAVID LAING'S COPY. Laing was one of the foremost Scottish antiquarians and bibliographers; he was a learned bookseller and, from 1837 to his death in 1878, keeper of the library of the Writers to the Signet, Edinburgh. He edited a large number of works of Scottish poetry and prose collectors, and formed a spectacular collection of Scottish historical materials which were dispersed posthumously through four huge sales at Sotheby's (1879-1881). The present pamphlet was lot 2988, and features Laing's autograph in pencil inside the front wrapper. This pamphlet contains the testimony and response of Alexander Monro in answer to charges of "misconduct of office" and also of "Popery." In December 1685 he… Read more

Description:
Cambridge: John Archdeacon, 1767. Two vols. (6.75 x 4.25"). Contemporary Scottish black morocco, spine in six compartments, red morocco lettering pieces in the second, others with gilt saltire with small flowers, covers framed with distinctive interlocking tool impressed individually. Red and black PRINTED book labels of Elisabeth Hall (dated 1769) pasted onto "Dutch gilt" endpapers. UNSOPHISTICATED and suitable for exhibition and study. This well preserved set of Scottish bindings is further distinguished by FOUR copy-specific letterpress bookplates, printed in red and black (no doubt in Scotland) which reads in full: "Elisabeth Hall, Her Bible. 20th June. M,DCC,LXIX." It would appear that the present volumes contain the only known impressions of eighteenth-century Scottish imprint, which merit inclusion in ESTC and elsewhere. The tools on the front cover of the bindings have not been matched with published examples, but the spine treatment and endpapers are decidedly Scottish. That the Psalms were… Read more

New York: Henry Holt & Co, 1874. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. Original publisher's mustard cloth, stamped in black adorned with a spider's web in which is perched a long-armed spider. First Edition in English and the First American edition. The first title was translated by Mrs. Sophie M. Butts; the second by William H. Browne. This book was first published in Russia in 1872-3, but was not published in England until 1895. Holt published six other Turgenev works in his Leisure Hour Series. A hint of age, else an unusually nice copy for a book from this series. This copy has a later state of the ads on the endpapers as usual (but seldom noted).

[2], 7, [12], 19-167; 147, 150-302 pp. (pagination skipped presumably due to a scribal error, resulting in the loss of one page of text?) + [15] pp. additional notes. Description:
Paris: Barba, Delaunay, Cavanagh, Les Marchands de Nouveautes, & Tiger, 1803. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 1803-1824. 16mo., together 5 works in one volume: 144 pp + 179 pp + 160 pp +122 pp + 108 pp., each work accompanied by an engraved frontispiece of which 2 are hand-colored (some fraying along outer edges). Bound in contemporary French half basane over marbled boards, a little worn but suitable for exhibition and study. Highly curious Sammelband of five "Ana," an important genre of late-18th and early 19th century French literature, today little known and under-appreciated by academics. At that time, EVERYONE read Ana, even the critics who excoriated these fugitive pieces of literary ephemera while secretly delighting in their unabashed "bad taste." Concerning Ana, Mornet correctly states: "One misunderstands the history of French thought in the 18th-century if one confines it to the history of strictly literary genres [...] In the provinces especially, far from the theater, the opera, and the… Read more

Description:
Paris and Montpellier, 1803. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Dates: 1803-1821. Quarto. Contemporary French decorated boards, smooth calf spine (damaged by biopredation along hinges but not affecting text), vellum corner tips, sprinkled red edges. Some foxing and staining (particularly at the end of the first Dissertation). With ink stamps "Sigillum Principis Palencae" on endleaves. A fascinating volume. The compiler of this curious Sammelband seems to have been fascinated by a number of disturbing topics including operations on cataracts, cyanose (or the blue malady), uterine hemorrhages, the anus "contre-nature," lithotomy, hysteria, vapors, apoplexy, and sulfuric acids. Illustrated with 4 plates, of which two are of medical instruments, one is of a shoulder brace, and one is too horrible to describe (but see illustration). A strange assemblage of horrendous early 19th-century medical studies; of the twenty works bound herein, no less than 12 were printed in Monpellier. CONTENTS: 1. Tartra, A. E.… Read more

Description:
Paris, 1790. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 1790-1794. Together 4 texts in one volume, bound for Comte de Hennezel d'Ormoy: early 20th-century half basane over marbled boards, spine gilt aux armes (see below). Legal judgments from the French Revolution, all first editions, all of great rarity. Includes the sentencing of Camille Desmoulins (1760-1794), a lawyer whose serious stammer (and violent temper) prompted him to turn away from the bar and towards politics on the eve of the French Revolution. On July 12, 1789, after Louis XVI had dismissed his popular minister of finance (Jacques Necker), and Desmoulins openly screamed his disappointment to the Parisians crownd gathered in the garden of the Palais Royal. This event made him famous in Paris as he was suddenly seen as a leader of the Revolution. Following Desmoulins, riots started throughout Paris. The mob, procuring arms by force on July 13, was partly organized as the Parisian militia, which was afterwards to be the National… Read more

Description:
Dumbarton, Scotland, 1790. Good. Folio half-sheet, 1 p. (20 lines), name of the recipient on verso, 2 vertical and 4 horizontal folds, evidence of wax seal on verso, old tape repair at top margin (not affecting text), ink gall corrosion on outer margin, affecting one word. Preserved in mylar sleeve. An extremely curious provincial Scottish letter, dated 1790, which incorporates misspellings based on non-standard sociolects of the Scottish dialect. While "worthless" relics such as this were almost invariably discarded, they remain of the great interest in Ortheopy (the study of pronunciation). Indeed, much of what is known about Vulgar Latin pronunciation is preserved in graffiti in the ruins of Pompei. Concerning the content of the letter: William Steuart (or Stewart) writes to John Adam, Esq. describing water damage to four rooms in Dumbarton Castle: two were newly painted, the other two newly wall-papered. An associate suggested that he procure a carpenter in Inversnaid (to the amount of GBP 35),… Read more

Description:
New York: Jonathan Leavitt, printed by G. P. Scott and Co, 1832. Good. 8vo in 4's. [4], 9-40 pp. Bound in sympathetic wrappers, evidence of stab-stitching. Foxing and browning throughout as is true in all copies. An interesting sermon preached in the midst of the 1832 cholera epidemic in New York, complete with the characteristic "fire and brimestone" judgments on the sins of the people. Cholera reached the Western Hemisphere during the second pandemic (1829-1851). Many contemporary journalistic sources associated the disease with "large numbers of Irish and other emigrants," a "class of persons particularly exposed and carrying the disease wherever they go." This particular sermon, preached upon Isaiah 26:9 ("When thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness"), lays the blame not on recent emigrants but rather on a wicked and atheistic generation who no longer fear God, and has forgotten Him. "Most were thought to have willfully weakened their bodies through… Read more

Frankfurt: Heirs of Jakob Fischer, 1629. Hardcover. Very good. 18mo. 281 pp., 3 ff. (p. 262-263 misnumbered "264-265"), the first page of "Descriptio auctorum," has a small hole in the out margin; 244 pp., 3 ff. Uniform toning thoughout. Bound in contemporary vellum, a little soiled, yapp edges. An extraordinary early 17th-century medico-legal book on the Virginity of Women, rife with magic and superstition. The author's "scientific" arguments rest on Pliny, Isidore of Seville, and Bartholomaeus Anglicus to maintain, i.a., that a scorpion injures a virgin far more than it does other women. He refers to astrology and believes that sitting on a certain root will break the hymen. A tree will be damaged if a virgin plucks its first fruits, but the idea that a virgin must throw her nightgown into the first after her first menstruation is mere "superstition." The work describes virginity according to canonical and civil law, as well as natural and "divine" law, with interesting discursions into sexual… Read more

Description:
Unbound. Very good. Undated (Late 19th-century). In a large 4to. binder. The condition is clean and quite fresh. A collection of curious Victorian "Cross Writing" examples. "Cross Writing" was usually reserved for love letters or close family members; it was initially a technique to maximize the amount of text that could be fitted onto one side of a sheet of paper: letters often either didn't have envelopes (and thus addressed and sealed on the blank side of the sheet) or were subject to a higher postage cost according to the number of sheets. "Cross Writing" evolving into a way to conceal the content of a letter from a casual observer, an early type of visual encoding. In the early 19th century, the postal system was financially demanding for some people, as was the scarcity of paper. Tom Standage writes in the Victorian Internet [1998]: "In the nineteenth century, letter writing was the only way to communicate with those living at a distance. However, prior to 1840, the post was expensive. Postal… Read more

Dallas: Stamps-Baxter Music & Printing Co, 1939. 198 x 135 mm. [1], 2-48 = 48 pp. Bound in stapled paper wrappers, soiled on front and back covers. Pages slightly yellowed, some foxing and staining throughout, pp. 23-26 loose. An advertisement for a new Stamps-Baxter publication, "Favorite Radio Songs No. 2" on pp. 46-48. With some condition problems, and priced accordingly. An fascinating piece of Dallas radio history, being program notes of an All-Night broadcast of early Southern Gospel Music on KRLD Radio Station (July 1-2, 1939). The pamphlet contains information and photographs of 30 obscure, now forgotten Gospel singing groups from all over the American South, and thus remains a valuable source of information not obtainable elsewhere. According to the introductory article by Harvey A. Armstrong, the purpose of the All-Night Bradcast was "to help promote and encourage nation-wide and better gospel singing." Many famous songwriters and Southern gospel music composers were in attendance that… Read more
