The Southern and Western Monthly Magazine and Review was popularly known as "Simms's Magazine" for its editor William Gilmore Simms, who took it on after withdrawing from The Magnolia. Though he championed a national literature, Simms was most interested in promoting Southern literature. "In Simms's view the Southern and western's nationalism and its sectionalism were in no way incompatible. Insisting that a truly national literature could be made up only `of the literature of distinct sections,' he dismissed charges of narrowness leveled at Southern magazines.
