Washington, D.C.: [Howard University], 1915. Near fine. 6 5/8" x 3 7/8". Stapled self-wrappers. Pp. 23. Near fine with minimal wear and a hint of dust soiling. This is a brochure for the Teachers College (TC) at Howard University for the 1915- 1916 school year. TC was established in 1899 by the Rev. Dr. Lewis Baxter Moore to "train leaders of educational thought and practice." By 1915, it had a student population of nearly 200 and had granted 125 degrees. The brochure stressed the demand for trained and capable African American teachers and listed employment statistics for TC graduates from 1900 to 1914. It provided information on courses of study, student activities, fees and admission. There was also a list of some of TC's outstanding graduates and a photographic image of its Carnegie Library. Rare documentation of the Teachers College at Howard University. OCLC shows no holdings.

Description:
Providence: Printed By Providence Press Company, 1881. 8 5/8" x 3 7/8". Stitched wrappers. Xi, 54pp. + several leaves of errata bound in. Good: front wrapper with large areas of loss and a diagonal closed tear extending to just under the word "telephone", upper corner with remnant of old label; most of spine perished and what's left is barely hanging on; rear wrapper lacking; a few small chips to first few leaves not affecting text. Otherwise sound and complete. A fairly early telephone directory. The preliminary pages describe rates, how to use a telephone, the location of public telephones and more. The directory consists of an alphabetized list of subscribers for the Providence, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Bristol, East Greenwich, North Attleboro, Attleboro and Warren exchanges. A few brightly colored erratum leaves list subscribers that were not available when the book went to print in late 1881. Rare: we locate one copy owned by an institution, and possibly two others who don't list which specific… Read More

Description:
Washington DC, 1964. 4 1/8" x 3". 16 loose black and white photos. Fine with light edge wear. This is a group of black and white photos taken of a television screen showing the second inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson. Most of them show close-ups of either the President or Hubert Humphrey, with a couple showing them together. One photo shows Humphrey with his hand raised while he is being sworn in as Vice President. On January 20, 1965, LBJ's inauguration drew a crowd estimated at 1.2 million people, the largest in history until Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration with an estimated 1.8 million people. He delivered a 22 minute inaugural speech that prompted audience applause eleven times. Focusing on domestic affairs, he said: "In a land of great wealth, families must not live in hopeless poverty. In a land rich in harvest, children just must not go hungry. In a land of healing miracles, neighbors must not suffer and die untended. In a great land of learning and scholars, young people must be taught… Read More

Description:
[Revere, Massachusetts]: [Temple B'nai Israel], 1943. Good. 14" x 8½". Corner stapled, eight mimeographed leaves, printed rectos only. Pp. 8. Good: folded twice, bottom edge heavily worn with dogears and affecting a few characters of text. This is a mimeographed newsletter created by a Jewish congregation in Massachusetts that was intended to share news with members serving in World War II. It was produced by Temple B'nai Israel, a synagogue established in 1906 in Revere, Massachusetts. We are not sure how many issues were created as the copy here mentions a hope to publish once a month and that its goal was to "bring some pleasure and a touch of home to all you 'Men of Destiny.'" This issue included a message from Rabbi Morris B. Funk urging soldiers not to lose their faith or discount the value of Judaism during the war. There's also an article by a female member of the congregation, Belle Pearlman, who lamented the loss of the men of her town but also expressed admiration for the women in the… Read More

Nashville, Tennessee: Geo. H. Anderson, 1923. Good. Three black and white photographs, each measuring 8" x 10" on card mounts measuring 11 ½" x 13 ½". Photos very good with a few minor surface abrasions and one small stain in the background of one photo; mounts good with moderate wear, chipping and a bit wavy. This is a group of three spectacular photographs by a prolific Black photographer in Nashville which showcases Meharry Medical College's [MMC] pharmacy school graduating class of 1923, as well as the members of its Phi Beta Sigma chapter. MMC was the first medical school for African Americans in the South when it was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College. The school was chartered separately in 1915 and in the early 21st century became the largest HBCU devoted solely to educating scientists and healthcare professionals. The 1923 graduating class was Meharry's largest to that point with 198 degrees conferred and 20 of them going to women. While we cannot… Read More

Los Angeles, California: Los Angeles Times, 1980. Very good. Three posters, each measuring 18" x 23". Very good: one tiny tear to edge of one map, light foxing in the margin of another; else minimal wear and light creasing to edges. This is a set of three pictorial maps commissioned for the Los Angeles Bicentennial celebration and originally printed in the Los Angeles Times' Home magazine in 1980. They depict 300 years of Los Angeles area history, though the final hundred had yet to occur. The artist, Cathy Pavia, is a longtime art instructor and freelance illustrator for advertising and magazines. She also created the art for several books, including the Cathy and Company children's book series and Joey Green's The Zen of Oz: Ten Spiritual Lessons from Over the Rainbow. Each map has a key with between 22 and 38 highlighted areas, with text corresponding to each number along the bottom. The map entitled "The first hundred years, 1781-1881" stretches from Shoo Fly Pier, Santa Monica in the west to… Read More

Description:
Malden, Mass: [Jacob W. Powell], 1937. Very good. 9¼" x 6¼". Blue pebbled cloth, title gilt. Pp. xvi, 136 + 60 [of 60] photographically illustrated plates interspersed. Very good: light wear, a hint of toning to leaves. This is a detailed and heavily illustrated travelogue written by an AME Zion Elder and religious educator, Jacob W. Powell. The first three pages of the book include a detailed chronology of Powell's life, along with his numerous certifications related to religious teaching. From it, we learn that Powell was born a Methodist Episcopalian in 1866 and converted to the AME Zion Church in Boston in 1881. He worked as a stenographer for a number of religious and civil clients before becoming ordained a Deacon and later Elder. Powell served as Pastor of a few AME Zion and Baptist churches and, according to this book's dedication, taught over 4,000 students during his 54-year career. The book is simultaneously a travel log, travel guide, and collection of Powell's short essays on… Read More

Description:
[Columbus, Ohio?]: N.P., 1943. Good. Single sheet, folded thrice, measuring 6" x 4 1/8" folded, opens to 16½" x 12". One side contains an eight panel pamphlet, the other a small poster. Good: heavily worn with moderate dust soiling to cover panel; tiny separations at edges; a few holes at intersecting folds. This is a re-election campaign pamphlet targeted to African Americans created by either a Black author or an African American organization we cannot uncover. One side is a brochure with text that listed the general accomplishments of mayor Floyd F. Green, included a list of nine African Americans he appointed to government posts, and a short one page essay, "Our Place In Columbus." While we have learned nothing of the author, the title of the essay, along with text such as "no city has contributed more to the uplift of OUR race," leads us to believe that either Parker was African American, and/or the pamphlet was the product of a Black political organization. The opposite side is a poster… Read More
