Kazan: Elektro-tipografiia 'Milliat', 1921. 86 pp. 23x17 cm. No covers. Spine repaired with paper strip, fragments of t.p. lost (no text affected), small stains, soiling occasionally, otherwise good internally. In Tatar language using Arabic script. The title page is in Tatar and Russian. One of 5000 copies. The work 'Artistic Theater. Paths of Socialist Theate' was written by Platon Kerzhentsev (1881-1940), one of Proletkult's leading theoreticians and the founder of the mass social organization "The League of Time" (later The League of Scientific Organization of Labour). 'Artistic Theater' was first published in Petrograd in 1918. Since then, the book has been reprinted several times in Russian and other languages. Being a historical review, the original work contained significantly less information than each next edition. Most likely, this Tatar adaptation was based on the third (1919) or the fourth (1920) Russian editions. The book also may be considered a manifesto for proletarian theater… Read More

St. Petersburg: Gos. izdatel'stvo, 1921. 25, [2] pp., 16 ills. 30,5x23,5 cm. In original publisher's printed wrappers. Spine chipped, with a tear, some stains on the covers, otherwise very good. First edition. Scarce. Dedicated to the students of Free State Art Studios in Petrograd. Written by the Russian art scholar Nikolay Punin (1888- 1953) in 1921, this is one of the most important books in the history of Russian avant-garde. The edition represents the first attempt at analyzing works of the central figure of Russian Constructivism and a close friend of the author, Vladimir Tatlin (1885-1953). Punin starts his monograph by criticizing French art and its devotion to the depiction of the illusion of life. Against this background, the art critic distinguishes new Russian art as the only salvation from the "romantic symbolism" of the Impressionists and Cubists. Punin meticulously analyzes Tatlin's oeuvre and describes the artist as a cultural pioneer - a champion of the new era when "art is starting… Read More

Stamp on the title page 'From books of Niccolo Mitsishvili'. Rare. One of 3,000 copies. Constructivist design by the Soviet artist Alexey Surikov. The first edition of llya Selvinsky's famous work "Pusthorg" [i.e. Fur Trade], based on the author's personal experience of work as a fur specialist. Written within an astonishingly short period of time (from February to March 1927), "Pushtorg" played an essential role in shaping Selvinsky's writing career. A celebration of constructivist ideas, this novel in verse opposed the proletarian revolution of 1917 and developed a notion that the leading role in the country should belong to the technical intelligentsia. Shortly after the book was published, the deputy head of the Central Committee's Propaganda and Agitation Department, Platon Kerzhentsev (1881-1940), who later became a victim of Soviet repressions,… Read More

A small lithographed map of the Ukrainian SSR, made in three colors. In Ukrainian. Crimea is not part of Ukraine, the Western regions are divided between Poland and Bessarabia. The map was drawn up at the end of 1924 and shows the transitional period of the administrative management system, in which the "relics" of the Russian Empire are clearly visible - the provinces are indicated in accordance with the division adopted in 1923 according to the principle of province-okrug-district-village council (without districts and hairs). They will be abolished by the Soviet government in a few months. The 1920s were a turbulent time for Ukraine, years when borders, administrative divisions and the very essence of the division and administration of the territory changed more than once.
