Totally unaffected by that disappointment was Marks' love of sport - all sport - inherited from his renowned father, Alec Marks. In Tales from the Locker Room Neil Marks has written arguably the finest collection of sporting stories to be published in Australia. He ranges through cricket, rugby league, golf, racing and rugby in telling his ageless yarns. Some are hilarious, some deeply moving; all offer the reader captivating insights into the world of sport. Champions walk the author's stage - Bradman, Churchill, Barassi, Neil Harvey, Mike Whitney, Mark Ella and countless more. No one has ever… Read More

I grew up in the mountains inland from Gloucester in New South Wales where my family sharefarmed land belonging to one of the large old companies which owned holdings there. In those days of the great depression I lived with the rainforest growing almost to the back door. The rainforest was being continuously felled in those days to make way for more dairy and beef production.
Even before school age I gained an interest in those marvellous plants growing on the trees and aided by devoted parents I had quite an established collection of the native orchids of the area by 1937-38.
My working life 'till coming to Queensland was spend on the land in the Gloucester-Taree area of the Manning River Valley. Barbara and I married in 1957 and as our family grew up we became more involved in the forests of the area as our children shared our love of the bush and nature itself: plus the joy of bird… Read More

Large print - in good condition - ex library - has markings from use - due to differing weights in books, postage maybe adjusted at checkout.Tall, quiet, and darkly handsome, Matt Ingram had shouldered more than his share of life's burdens. Besides working his farm in the Cumberland Gap and raising his little nephew, he had to keep a watchful eye on his womanizing wastrel of a step-brother. And he knew he had his work cut out for him on the night two men first saw their beautiful new neighbour. She appeared out of the mountain mists, looking more like an airy sprite than a flesh-and-blood woman. Matt's reaction was all too real. He longed to lose himself in Kaitlan's innocence. No matter what it took, he would protect Kaitlan from the careless seduction of his stepbrother, for this was the one woman whose bright spirit could light up his life.

In good condition - has yellow aging spots on front and back pages - has markings from use - due to differing weights on books, postage maybe adjusted at checkout.Sydney in 1841: a rough tumult of a town. An upper-class few clung to their illusions of privilege while the streets teemed with brawling chaotic life: the immigrant overflow of Britain's desperate slums, dispossessed Irish peasants, indentured servants and labourers, drunken seamen, political and religious refugees.Into this sink-or-swim whirlpool of ambition, despair and hope, came Raunie, half Irish and half gipsy, just disembarked from the floating, fever-ridden squalor of the immigrant barque May Queen. Sixteen, pregnant and widowed, her wild flaunting beauty barely disguised by her filthy ragged clothes, she had nothing but the hard-won knowledge, wit and determination of a born survivor. But already she had sensed that in this harsh half-lawless society, there were possibilities as well as pitfalls, rewards as well as dangers.

In good condition - ex library - has markings from use - due to differing weights in books, postage maybe adjusted at checkout. It's not the first time former government agent Frank Compton has had a new friend die within moments of meeting him. It's just that usually they have the decency to do it somewhere quiet and out of the way, not in the middle of a crowded Quadrail train. Being the only man at the scene of a violent murder could put a crimp in Compton's travel plans. At least this time he knows who's behind the attack - just not which body was used to carry it out.Compton's enemy, and the enemy of all civilized life, is an ancient, telepathically linked parasitic entity known as the Modhri. Anyone, anywhere, anytime can be one of its subconsciously enslaved walkers. It's goal is domination of the galaxy, one mind at a time. But the personal touch is so inefficient. It's only a matter of time until the Modhri's sleeper army of unwitting couriers, spies, and assassins acquires the firepower to… Read More

And the original volunteers for the second Australian Imperial Force, the men who enlisted in those last months of 1939, were reckless, adventurous, wild and flamboyant. They were also, according to General Sir Thomas Blamey, 'the first and the finest'; men raised on the feats of the ANZACs and keen to uphold its legend. The Thirty-niners sailed for the Middle East in early 1940. Their grand and successful campaigns in the Libyan Desert - the storming of Bardia and Tobruk and the capture of thousands of prisoners - were followed by the debacles of Greece and Crete. Strangely, given his loathing of the dead man, Mickey had received an invitation to the reception. Keen to confront the bully who made his youth a misery, Mickey had gone, but then found his tormentor's body - and fled the scene...Rafferty, aware that his brother hated Seward, and that Mickey had three pointers to guilt - the means, the motive and the opportunity - finds himself torn between protecting his family and finding the real killer.
