London: George G. Harrap, 1939. First edition, 1939. Hardback. 284pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. 'Teamsman' continues the story Crichton Porteous began so well. Farmer's Creed. We learn more in the opening chapters of Mr Boone, the sturdy farmer in the Derbyshire hills who derived a philosophy of farming from Ruskin and Swift, and refused to insure hid property because he believed a man should depend upon himself. But there was a limit to what an ambitious farm labourer could learn from Mr Boone. Once more we make friends with a gallery of real characters - Mr Basil, the farmer; Hector the farm student; Old Tom and his son Abel; the two labourers; and, not least the team. Porteous had difficulties with this team. He had to learn their ways and their whims and temperament. Porteus describes the technique and the 'feel' of ploughing and… Read More

London: Conran Octopus Ltd, 1996. First edition, 1996. Hardback. 288pp. Original black boards with blue print to upper board and spine. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. In this personal and campaigning book, Terence Conran argued the case for design as much more than the superficial application of styling. It should be intrinsic to the development of newe technologies and to the success of one product over another. As the pre-eminent arbiter of taste in post-war Britain, Conran was uniquely placed to offer a passionate view of the role of design and the designer. A fascinating text full of information and anecdote, and a stimulating visual gallery of key designs of the twentieth century. Book in near fine condition. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. London: Collins, 2013. First edition, 2013. Hardback. xiv, 461pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. A fascinating overview of these small seabirds whose graceful flight and command of the air are among their most attractive features. Most of the five species of terns breeding in Britain & Ireland today are under intensive management, involving protection from predators, human interference, egg-collecting, land-use changes and a range of issues relating to climate change. If these protective measures were abandoned the the number of terns would inevitably decline, with the very real possibility that several species would end up on the endangered list. Drawing on extensive research, the authors focus on migrations, food and feeding ecology, as well as breeding biology and behaviour. Importantly, they highlight conservation issues and prospects, and what this means for the future of terns. Front cover designed by Robert Gillmor. Book as new and unread. Dust jacket near fine and unclipped. Quite a… Read More
