Some staining to endpaper and edge, leading into the outer margins of some pages. Text and illustrations not affected. While the staining is not pretty, this is one of the rare occasions to acquire one of the scarcer signed items from Seamus Heaney (1 of 25 copies from an edition of only 100 signed copies). This is a super-rare publication and even more so signed by Seamus Heaney and T.P.Flanagan on the endpaper. Excellent collectable !

Thomas Power O'Connor was a journalist, an Irish nationalist political figure, and a member of parliament in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for nearly fifty years. O'Connor was elected Member of Parliament for Galway Borough in the 1880 general election, as a representative of the Home Rule League. At the next general election in 1885, he was returned both for Galway and for the Liverpool Scotland constituencies, which had a large Irish population; he chose to sit for Liverpool, and represented that constituency in the House of Commons from 1885 until his death in 1929. O'Connor founded and was the first editor of several newspapers and journals: The Star (1887), The Weekly Sun (1891), The Sun (1893), M.A.P. and T.P.'s Weekly (1902). (Wikipedia)

The map is crowded with topographical detail, showing the location of rivers, hills, cities -such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam - towns and the network of roads canals criss-crossing Holland. The political sub-division of Holland are also shown. The precariousness of Dutch security is evident through the myriad of fortified towns and cities across the map. Very interesting map of the Low Countries - the modern countries of Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands - in eye-catching detail. The region is dominated by the Seine River emptying into the 'Mare Britannicum' in the south, the Rhine and Meuse in the centre and the River Ems discharging into the Dollart Bay in the right top corner of the map. A richly elaborate and highly imaginative map of the Asia, centering upon an emaciated Indian sub-continent, and including the Arabian peninsula, Persia and Caspian Sea in the west across to China, Cambodia and the Malay peninsula in the east. Off the mainland lie the Philippine and Indonesian archipelagos: Luzon, Mindanao, 'Celebes' (Sulawesi), Borneo, Java and Sumatra are all identified. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and the unnamed Maldives are shown off the Indian coast. A richly elaborate and highly imaginative map of South America ('America Inferior') from the Panama Isthmus in the north to Terra del Fuego in the south. The south part of Jamaica and Barbados are shown near the top of the map. Ascension Island is also shown off the coast. The continent appears bulging and does not bear the more elongated form of later maps. River, lake, forest, mountain and volcano features are engraved on the map: the Amazon river, Andes mountains and Lake Titicacca ('Parime lacus, alias Titicacca') are all shown.
