Boston: Laura Davidson, 1991. Davidson, Laura. Small octavo. (6)pp., frenchfold. One of forty-one copies, signed by the artist. This artist's book by Davidson, her first editioned book, uses hand-printed linocuts and collages to interpret a travelogue, showing keyholes, houses, and round swirls on top of maps. Printed in three colors, the five pages of illustrations are followed by a page of text, which recites a short Hindu tale, printed in black. Bound in wooden boards, which are shaped like a house and painted black, with a leather spine. On the front cover is mounted a metal key, the words "to open" printed in pencil above the key. Fine.

Of unknown publication: its size makes it smaller than the Waldmann & Pfitzner edition, and its mise-en-page is more condensed than the similarly sized Toppan Holy Bible. Set in card, on which a former owner has identified the text and noted that reading it requires a 75-power lens. (Slug measures 5//32 in./4mm square).

Description:
Cambridge, MA, 1953. Single sheet of Massachusetts Institute of Technology/Dard Hunter Museum letterhead. Dated April 16, 1953, and addressed to Louis W. Doll of the Charles E. Tuttle Company in Vermont, to whose prior correspondence Hunter here responds. The crux of Hunter's letter concerns watermark techniques - specifically the manner in which Japanese papermakers "tried to imitate the European type of light-and-shade watermarking." Hunter then explains that "(t)he Japanese method is a hand-rubbing process after the paper has been formed, while the European method is done entirely through the use of an embossed mould." He references a specimen accompanying his letter, presumably the example included here, and closes with a sentiment of anticipation for the arrival of "the copy of the Papermaking book when it arrives from Japan."
