Description:
Washington City: M'Gill & Witherow, 1874. Softcover. Good. Pamphlet (5 3/4" x 9 1/4"), stitched as issued. 8pp. Original printed paper wrappers. The Massachusetts Colonization Society was originally formed to address the slavery issue by encouraging emancipation and then colonization of freed slaves outside the United States. As part of a national movement with the American Society for Colonizing the Free People of Color, the colony of Liberia was formed in 1822 and then became an independent state in 1847. Despite the overwhelming opposition of most African-Americans and the end of slavery of in the US, the Society continued to press its case. In this particular report from 1874, the managers of the Society struggle to remain relevant. Worldcat locates only 1 copy (in microfiche form) in US libraries. Wrappers lightly soiled with a corner crease on the front wrapper and few tiny chips at the edges.

Description:
[n.p, December 4th, 1839. Very good. Broadside, letterpress and woodblock type (approximately 7 3/4" x 9 3/4"). In what appears to be an unrecorded memorial broadside, William H. Magarge offers an emotional tribute to the life and death of a Miss Clarissa Howell Slingluff, who died of consumption at age twenty-one. The anonymous printer utilized over five type faces and an elaborate ornamental border to produce this tribute to young Miss. Slingluff. "O ! insatiable death ! why would you not release your grasp of one so dear ! But we should not repine--we would not wish these back Clarissa, to a vain, deceitful world, whose vicissitudes thou art safely beyond, mingling with the sainted spirits of a 'better land". Uncommon. Not listed in American Imprints or OCLC. Small stains and short edge-tears at the margins. Overall very good.

[circa 1852]. Very good. Broadsheet (approximately 9 /1/8" x 15") with 2 columns of printed text. This was the second annual report of this Baltimore fire insurance company. It included the financial position of the company, a summary of the policies outstanding and risks underwritten, and a list of the Board of Directors for 1852. In addition, in this period before independent auditors, the Board of Directors appointed a special committee to perform an audit or review of the financial records. The committee's report found that "after a very minute and careful examination . . . the Committee have found the books kept in a very clear and comprehensible manner; all perfectly correct. . . " A very scarce insurance item. Not recorded in Worldcat. Moderate soiling with crease marks from folding and a few tiny holes. Marginal tears repaired with no effect on text.
