Letter on Lee Simonson stationery to Carl Brandt, who published artists' pictures and articles about Simson in Harpers, Atlantic Monthly, and Vogue. "I do land an article in Vogue - a fashionable, popular women's magazine which prints only stuff that in interest at least is amusing - instead of waiting for the article to appear and seeing whether you couldn't wave it in a few editorial faces with the remark" what did I tell you?" or words to that effect, you amiably wash your hands of me....." The group of ten personal checks, dated from January to November 1978, offers a window into Williams' activity during that time. Several checks were paid to a French restaurant, one to a hospital and several to other bank accounts. Williams is considered on of America's most important dramatists. He won the Pulitzer Prize for "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1948 and for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 1955. In addition, "The Glass Menagerie" (1945) and "The Night of the Iguana" (1961) received New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards. His 1952 play, "The Rose Tattoo," received the Tony Award for best play. He moved to New Orleans in 1939 and changed his name to "Tennessee" for the state of his father's birth. Williams signs each check in full, "Tennessee Williams" under his printed name. We typically sell Williams' checks for $120-$150. We offer this group for $800/NET. Autograph

Description:
In both war-time letters to his cousin, Charles Getz, Weber writes mostly of support for Russia against the Nazis but he also discusses his art. In the letter dated 1942, Weber offers Charles congratulations on his marriage. Weber comments on his cousin no longer being lonely. "One can read the greatest books... but reading is not living. Life without human (and (social) [sic] contact is pretty barren." Weber continues by commenting on an "excellent appreciation of my work in the ‘Morning Freiheit' by Dr. Kloomok... his is one of the best Jewish writers...." Dr. Isaac Kloomok was a scholar who wrote about Jewish artists, including Weber and Marc Chagall. Weber writes of current events. "At the moment the news from Russia is not so very good, and you know how grieved I am, but in the end the Nazi bastards will be conquered and sent to hell for all time!...." He continues in English until the last paragraph which he writes in Yiddish. "I would like to apologize for not writing in Yiddish, it takes too… Read More

Stekel writes to the painter, Ludwig Hessheimer (1872-1956) giving his view of Hessheimer's exhibition. In full. "Dear Mr. Hessheimer, I just returned from your exhibition. It made a deep and lasting impression on me. You have seen everything with the eyes of a poet. I like the mood pictures best. There were quite a few people there, all of whom were full of praise. Even painters...and that means something. The pictures of Ohrida lake are reminiscent of Bocklin. They have depth and grandeur. In the picture 'Longing' I was perturbed by the angel on high. He is not giving a fortunate impression which may be due to the position of his legs. Also the etching in which the images of wife and child appear to the soldier in the snow suffers from the flaw that visions must be expressed more shadowy, like a delicate breath which spreads across the distance. The contrast between the real and the vision must be more pronounced. But these are just trifles. You now have a foothold in Vienna and we hope to greet you… Read More

The film of Moore's exhibition is an excellent way of showing sculpture and I am sure it will have appeal to the public. It will help to stimulate interest in art and help to publicize art and the artist. I appreciate very much your asking my opinion on an article concerning an artist whom I consider to be a great contemporary. It is time that a magazine such as yours, brings serious modern art before the public and if I can assist you in any way I shall be happy to do so. Rivera discusses future exhibitions and current work in this typed letter to Reginald Poland, Director of The Fine Arts Gallery, San Diego (1925-1950. Rivera arrived in San Francisco with Frida Kahlo in November of 1930 and went to live with Ralph Stackpole, the American sculptor, painter and muralist at 716 Montgomery Street, a locale that acted as a social center for the artistic community in San Francisco. They lived at that address with Stackpole until they left San Francisco in June, several months after Rivera wrote to Poland. Rivera discusses the possibility of an exhibition in San Diego. "Thank you for your interest... I took the matter up with Mr. Rollins of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and tried to arrange for an exhibition in San Diego. But it was impossible because almost the entire exhibit was loaned...." Rivera then explains that he is sending "aquarelles and drawings" to the Detroit Institute of Fine Art and that he is returning to Mexico to "complete my work in the… Read More

Cain refers to author John O'Hara (1905-70) as well as to Judge John Sirica, remembered as the Watergate judge who ordered President Nixon to turn in his White House tapes over to the Senate committee. Cain writes, "In re THE CHRISTMAS SPEERT[sic], the piece I suspect of being O'Hara's first in New York: I reprinted it on the Christmas Page, December 25, of the New York World, 1929, as I pin down by the following recollection: I was in touch with the big money at the time, so I could have produced a play, and on the basis of this piece sent for O'Hara to try and persuade him to write it....I invited him down to the apartment...in October 1929, on East Nineteenth Street...my wife Elina wasn't there...." He explains why the meeting had to take place only in 1929 and continues. "O'Hara seemed surprised at my admiration for the piece, indifferent to my idea, and utterly indifferent to me. He was not the easiest person to like, being quite cold in his manner, even at age 24...I do not think I was alone in… Read More

Kent writes a discerning letter identifying the poems which "roused" in him a "deep emotion." to an English professor about verses he illustrated. "With the exception of 'The Hunting of the Snark,' the 'Bab Ballads,' and such things which I have over and over again thoroughly enjoyed, I must say that 'enjoyment' is not the term for the deep emotion...that greater poetry has roused in me, I am not telling you what poems I have enjoyed, but what poems have most moved me...." He continues to reply to his correspondent's request to suggest a poem for a book. "...there is little sense in mentioning "The Odyssey,' or even 'The Ancient Mariner,'...his final words to the Wedding Guest, beginning, 'Farewell, farewell, But this I tell....'and continuing to the end. These last stanzas, following all the poem that has preceded, are to me a deeply moving and convincing a creed for living as I know...." He signs above the typed name, "Rockwell Kent."
