Vol7 no4 of a monthly magazine for Local Union officers and stewards of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America(UE). This small octavo publication is fine in photographic card wrappers, no tears or marks as it has been protected by a stiff card envelope. This book comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 - 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R.. In 1969 he married his third wife who was a Swedish princess and with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to France explains the presence of his books in the United Kingdom. Fine 1954

London: Andre Deutsch, 1959. Pre-publication proof of Geoffrey Hill's first mainstream collection of poetry. Printed card wrappers inscribed 'June' to upper cover - presumably the month of first publication. Collates [14] pp59 [5]. Very good condition throughout, the text clean and unmarked. Hill taught at Leeds University from 1954-1980 which probably explains the appearance of this volume among a library of books recently acquired in Yorkshire. The poems in this volume have been described as 'largely vatic in nature' - the collection was a success and it begins with the famous poem 'Genesis'. Manuscript translation by an English lawyer determined to inject his enthusiasm for Lucretius into this work by a 17th century Swiss natural philosopher - completing his English makeover with marginal references to Milton's Paradise Lost. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Quarto in modern half tan calf over marbled boards; an eighteenth century presentation inscription from the actor/ playwright George Alexander Stevens mounted on the first original endpaper: 'Presented to William Massey by his esteemed Friend Geo. Alex Stevens Esq.r 18 Jan.ry 1773'. Roberts begins with a manuscript title page, adding lines from Thomas Creech's translation of Lucretius which are not present in the original: 'But above all 'tis Pleasentest to gett/ The Top of High Philosophy...' (Lucretius's depiction of ataraxia at the beginning of Book II of De Rerum Natura) and dates the page to 29th September, 1701. Very Good. pp377 A yellowback edition from 1889 of the romantic novel 'Under-Currents' by Irish writer Mrs Margaret Hungerford, best known for her novel 'Molly Bawn'. This new edition is in its typical two shilling format of illustrated glossy paper covered boards with decorative spine and adverts to the lower cover. Very good, boards rubbed to edges and corners, spine creased, faint ownership inscription to head of upper cover; crack along front hinge of yellow end papers which have a blind stamp of W H Smith of London, pages clean and crisp within a firm binding. Near fine in pink card wrappers. This book comes from the collection of Walter Stein, a British writer, literary critic and Catholic moral philosopher. Born in 1922, Stein was a Jewish refugee from pre-war Austria, educated by the Quakers in York and eventually a Catholic convert who worked in the Department of Extramural Studies at Leeds University. London: Collins, 1965. No Binding. Very Good. Draft dustjacket design for the reissue of Blunden's classic account of battalion life on the Somme and in Flanders between 1915 and 1918. In this version the unnamed artist has laid out the montage, jotting a handwritten credit to the Imperial War Museum for the photograph of the stricken tank over a gouache backdrop of orange, red and crimson with white lettering. Handwritten notes point to changes that were subsequently made in the design such as the increase in size for the author's name above the title. The unnamed artist has used card with scored lines demarcating front cover from spine. Very Good 1965

Near Fine. pp 121 Thomas Nashe's novel of 1594 first published in this edition in 1948 with the artist Michael Ayrton's dedicatory drawing on the first free endpaper and inscribed 'Magda from Michael'. Near fine in fresh blue cloth, browning to end papers, pages crisp; in a very good price-clipped jacket, lightly soiled and nicked to the edges and tanned spine. Magda Paton-Freeman worked for the BBC, reputedly replying to Lord Haw Haw's infamous broadcasts, and thereby earning herself a place on Goebbels' death list. Ayrton achieved success as a painter, printmaker, sculptor and designer; his considerable output of sculptures, book-illustrations, poems and stories reveals a lifelong obsession with flight, myth and mazes. 1970. 220 x 143 mm. Very Good. Rudolf Escher, Univers de Rimbaud, 1er cycle, pour tenor et orchestre, 1969-70; in yellow card wrappers. This score is from a large collection of scores that belonged to the conductor Sir Colin Davis, many annotated and used in performance, almost all from the post-war period and including at least two examples of scores from which Davis conducted the work's premier: Thea Musgrave's Clarinet Concerto (Davis was himself originally a clarinettist by training) and Malcolm Williamson's The Stone Wall which Davis premiered at the Last Night of the Proms in September 1971. Most of the scores are full size performance versions, several very large indeed in order to accommodate the scoring of a post-Schoenberg orchestra. Davis achieved global recognition for his conducting with a particular enthusiasm for the music of Mozart, Berlioz, Elgar, Sibelius, Stravinsky and Tippett. Very Good 1970

A Victorian guide to the art of letter writing, including many fine examples by British writers such as Dr Johnson, Sir Walter Scott, Hannah More and Robert Burns. An attractive small volume bound in publisher's embossed brown cloth with gilt spine decoration. The engraved title page, frontispiece and vignettes within the text illustrate the pleasure of writing and receiving well crafted letters. The book has been well cared for by its owners, a little fading to the spine, spotting to the edges and text, overall near fine. Near Fine 1856

[4] The official four page 'Programme' sent to delegates attending the Darwin commemoration held in Cambridge between 22 and 24 June, 1909 when the University hosted scientists, scholars and public figures from 167 different countries to celebrate the centenary of Charles Darwin's birth and the ?ftieth anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. The large quarto-sized printed bifolium has a single horizontal fold which is torn about 4cm along from the foreedge, withe old folds near the foreedge. The text offers a detailed programme of events which begins with the Reception of Delegates in an evening reception at the Fitzwilliam Museum, through a Garden Party in the Fellows Garden at Trinity College, hosted by 'Mr William Erasums Darwin' and numerous other members of the Darwin family to the Rede Lecture delivered by Sir Archibald Geikie. In near fine condition, with author's inscription to head of upper cover. From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong from 1965 to 1972. Near Fine 1970
