Temple, Frederic Jacques; Rothchild, Judith (Artist)

  • Edition: Limited Edition
  • Book condition: Fine
  • Quantity available: 1
[Octon, France]: Verdigris, 2008. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Rothchild, Judith. Number 6 of 10 de luxe editions (total edition 50), oblong octavo size, [14] pp., signed by the artist and author, text in French. Frederic Jacques Temple (b. 1921), French poet and author, decided to pursue writing as a career following a meeting with Blaise Cendrars in 1949. This work by him is a collection of memories of the Aveyron River and surrounding area from childhood; his early memories influenced much of his work, including "L'Enclos" which celebrated the "mythical" city of Montpelier where he attended the college of the Enclos Saint-Francois. The accompanying intaglio prints by Judith Rothchild are a combination of mezzotint and dry point techniques for which she is well known, with the type enjambed to lengthen the ripples of the riverbanks which extend borderless across double-page spreads; thus each page flows seamlessly into the next like the bends of a river. • Quantity available: 1
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1881. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Church, Frederick S. and Moser, James H.. First printing, duodecimo size, 241 pp. The stories told by Joel Chandler Harris' (1848-1908) character Uncle Remus feature the popular Brer Rabbit from African-American folklore, a trickster character who lives by his wits; the book contains thirty-four stories, as well as songs and chants, and sketches about Uncle Remus under the section "His Sayings". The work "has been frequently censured for perpetuating African American stereotypes and for [Harris'] apparently nostalgic version of the antebellum South. . .'Uncle Remus' has been translated into over twenty-five languages and remains in print, but the uneasy role of race in the stories has perhaps discouraged post-Second World War adaptations and retellings, with Enid Blyton's versions in the 1950s a notable exception" (Loker). It still remains an important work in the canon of children' ... Read more

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Silverstein, Shel. First printing, octavo size, 62 pp. Shel Silverstein (1930-1999), a hugely talented man, gave to the world the perennial children's favourites "The Giving Tree" and "Where the Sidewalk Ends", which remain sought after today and have been reprinted countless times, into many different languages. Not everyone realizes that Silverstein was also a gifted cartoonist, songwriter and singer. As the book editor Otto Penzler wrote "The phrase 'Renaissance man' tends to get overused these days, but apply it to Shel Silverstein and it practically begins to seem inadequate. Not only has he produced with seeming ease country music hits and popular songs, but he's been equally successful at turning his hand to poetry, short stories, plays, and children's books." "Uncle Shelby's Zoo", or "Don't Bump the Glump", is Mr. Silverstein's only ... Read more

London: Chatto & Windus, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Henderson, Keith. The first edition with illustrations by Keith Henderson, octavo size, 284 pp., in the original dust jacket. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) is one of Britain's most influential Victorian novelists and poets; D. H. Lawrence wrote a study of Hardy, and he was the basis for the character of Edward Driffield in W. Somerset Maugham's "Cakes and Ale". He wrote of tragic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances; and was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature (n.b., above information from Wikipedia). "Under the Greenwood Tree" was Hardy's second novel, published anonymously in 1872. While some think of this as one of Hardy's "lesser novels" it is an important precursor to his major works, and provides an important prequel and establishing myth for the world of Wessex that Hardy depicted in subsequent tragic works.
