First Edition. Signed by Navy Chief Engineer Alban C. Stimers on the first page: Alban C. Stimers U.S. Navy New York Feb. 1857. Stimers worked with John Ericsson on the design and construction of the ironclad turret ship U.S.S. Monitor, and served on board the Monitor during her historic battle against the Confederate ironclad C.S.S. Virginia on March 9th 1862. In 1862-63 he worked with Ericsson again during the building of the Passaic Class ironclads. He accompanied these ships during operations against the Confederacy, most notably the bombardment of Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor, on April 7, 1863. Some wear to binding; some light foxing. Samuel Hunt was installed as pastor of First Congregational Church, Boston, on December 4, 1850. He resigned in July of 1864. He then joined the American Missionary Association and was instrumental in establishing schools among the freedmen in North Carolina. He became the secretary and then vice president of that association, working with Hon. Henry Wilson and helping helping him to write The Rise and Fall of the Slave Power in America.An unusual item of North Carolina interest.Original wrappers. Boston: Printed by C.P. Moody (1855).
