Description:
THE FIRST WORK OF FICTION WRITTEN IN SWEDISH TO HAVE AN AUSTRALIAN SETTING. Stockholm : Gadelius, 1817. First edition. Duodecimo, modern half green morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands and gilt lettering (sunned), modern marbled endpapers, original printed upper wrapper bound in (but lacking the lower wrapper), 98 pp; a crisp, clean copy in handsome modern binding. Ferguson, 691a. The ideas and social attitudes expressed in the works of Swedish romantic poet and novelist C.J.L. Almqvist were highly unconventional for their period, being considered tantamount to revolutionary in many quarters of Swedish society - this, in spite of the fact that Almqvist was ordained as a Lutheran pastor at quite a young age. Parjumouf is one of his first published works, written at a time in his life when his main influence was the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In this novella, a story within a story, Almqvist relates the strange, romantic tale of Parjumouf, a woman who lives in the earthly… Read More

His writings, especially his poetry, reflected a keen interest in the study of nature.' (AustLit) Trove locates only four copies in Australian libraries (NLA; SLV; SLNSW; Central Highlands Libraries. Description:
London : V & A Publishing, 2010. Quarto, boards in dustjacket, pp. 224, illustrated. From camisoles to corsets, basques to boudoir caps and girdles to garters, Underwear: Fashion in Detail gets up close to some of the most intimate items in the V&A. The book traces the evolution of underwear, from rare examples dating from the sixteenth century and the exaggerated shapes of eighteenth-century courtly undergarments, to Dior's curvaceous 'New Look' girdles to contemporary lingerie by Agent Provocateur and Rigby and Peller. Meticulous colour photography shows these fascinating garments in close detail, while intricate line drawings reveal their construction. The book also highlights the work of designers such as Vionnet and Westwood, who have taken influence from underwear for their own outerwear creations.

Description:
Watercolour on paper, 240 x 345 mm (image), signed and dated in image l.l. 'E. Parsons 1885'; small vertical section of discolouration along right section of the image, otherwise very good condition; housed in a hand gilded period style frame by Jarman's Framing after a design by recognised colonial framer Isaac Whitehead. Elizabeth Parsons (1831-1897) - also known as Mrs. George Parsons - was a significant but under-recognised female colonial artist working in Melbourne and Victoria in the 1870s and 1880s. She was a founding member of the Australian Artists’ Association. Examples of Parsons' work are held in the NGA, NGV and SLV. This attractive plein air watercolour shows a group of girls in a pastoral setting in St Kilda or Prahran, where Parsons resided at the time. To the left is the distinctive silhouette of the Wesleyan Church on Fitzroy Street, St. Kilda (opened in 1858, the four pinnacles visible were removed in the 1960s), to the right are some small sail boats on Albert Park Lake, with… Read More

Description:
Oil on canvas, 420 x 310 mm, signed by the artist 'D. Meeson' lower left; in fine condition, in the original gilt frame, 650 x 540 mm. The protagonists in this undated genre scene by Australian expatriate artist and suffragist Dora Meeson (1869-1955) are both dressed in the traditional costume of Brittany: the woman wears a plain style of Breton coif, and the man a Breton cap and clogs. Behind them is pictured the facade of a typical Brittany-style thatched-roof cottage. Although it is possible the work was completed during her time in France in 1898-99, it is more likely to have been painted by Meeson to appeal to a French market in the period after World War One, when, as 'an ardent feminist who sought financial independence, Meeson became the principal breadwinner [in her marriage to George Coates] by painting a broad range of popular subjects for the market, including sentimental topics, studies of children, tourist souvenirs and rural scenes' (DAAO).  Melbourne-born Meeson received her early… Read More

Melbourne : Macmillan Art Publishing, 2007 . Quarto, boards in dustjacket, pp. 394, illustrated. Fine copy of an out of print title. Signed by Sonia Payes and dated 2007. This richly illustrated publication provides sensitive, rare and enticing insights into the lives, works and unique studio environments of 60 significant artists. As artist Sonia Payes' latest publication, it was timed to coincide with the 2007 Venice Biennale in which several of the book's artists have represented Australia. It was received with enthusiasm in Venice and in London. Two years in their compilation, and requiring travel across Australia and overseas, around 700 images offer outstanding visual descriptions of how and where individual Australian artists live and what fires their imagination. The 400 spectacular pages are introduced by art critic and academic, Professor Ted Snell, and expertly designed by Simon Strong. Commentary on each artist is provided by a prominent author, of whom more than fifty have… Read More

Watercolour with gold highlights on card, 334 x 254 mm, signed and dated 'Phil McLachlan 23' lower right; in very good condition. Housed in a custom timber frame in period style by Philip Tregear, Melbourne. A stunning original watercolour from the artist's estate. Painted when McLachlan was just 18, it exemplifies her innate sense of style and design. Phyllis (Phil) McLachlan was a talented artist of the 1920s and 30s best known for her cover designs for The Home and Triad magazines. She left school at the age of sixteen, and studied painting with Thea Proctor and at the Julian Ashton Art School. She exhibited at the Society of Women Painters in 1924 and married noted naval officer and diplomat John Collins in 1930. McLachlan's work is rare in the market or in public collections, however notably an archive of naval costume drawings is held by the Mitchell Library, who also acquired a fine watercolour of a ballet scene from us in 2011. A detailed work by this relatively unrecognised artist.… Read More
