Marginal note in pencil by a former owner, Prof. Warner Berthoff, on one page of the chapter on Walt Whitman; otherwise text is clear and unmarked. Label pasted on ffep states "With the compliments of the Author." Evidently the initial recipient was Lucy Donnelly, long-time head of the Department of English at Bryn Mawr College. Pasted on rfep is a letter to Miss Donnelly from John A. Reed, VP of Little, Brown, dated Dec. 21, 1938, advising that a paragraph on p. 294 has been altered in all copies of the book except those, like this one, "sent out before the matter was called to our attention" by the estate of M.
