1 p.l., 333 pp. 8vo, cont. marbled half-calf & marbled boards (corners slightly rounded), spine ornately gilt, red morocco lettering-piece on spine. Berlin: H. Frölich, 1801. First edition and an attractive copy of this important conservative analysis of the French Revolution and the resulting disruptions throughout Europe. Gentz (1764-1832), a prolific author and zealous critic of the Revolution and Napoleon, studied under Kant in Königsberg. During his years as a lower-level government official in Berlin, he wrote several essays and books to great acclaim, including a very successful translation of Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France. Aware of his significant influence, the British even paid Gentz for works antagonistic to the French cause or laudatory of Britain's political and economic systems. Following his divorce and move to Vienna, he met and collaborated with Klemens von Metternich, and together they crafted the underpinnings of modern European conservatism ... Read more

Double-page hand-colored printed map. 20 pp. Large 4to, orig. decorative engraved upper wrapper bound in modern boards (light foxing). Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1777. First edition of this quite fascinating cartographical work, which includes a specimen of the author's first experiment in map printing. In this work, Breitkopf (1719-94), the eminent printer, type-founder, and bookseller, describes his invention for printing maps with movable type. "He claimed to have been the inventor of map printing by the use of types, or what is known as 'typometry.' William Haas, a type-founder of Basle, appears to have previously published a method somewhat similar, but Breitkopf had been experimenting on the matter for some twelve years previously, and it was only his dissatisfaction with the result obtained that induced him to keep his achievements to himself."-Bigmore & Wyman, I, p. 81. Nice copy of a book which is oftentimes badly foxed. ❧ Bagrow, History of Cartography, ... Read more

Two folding engraved plates. 263, [1] pp. 8vo, orig. German marbled boards (extremities with minor wear & rubbing), orig. label on spine. Halle: Renger, 1812. First separate edition and the first edition in German. "One of the acknowledged classics of embryology."Garrison-Morton 471(describing the publication of the Latin original in the journal of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1768-69). Wolff's description of the formation of the chick's intestine by the rolling inward of the leaf-like layer of the blastoderm was important for proving his theory of epigenesis, and at the same time disproving preformationism. These leaf-like layers were a potent influence in the work of Pander and Baer, who praised this book highly. Wolff's paper was largely ignored until the appearance of this translation into Germany by Meckel, who added a 56-page introduction and notes. "The publication of Meckel's translation of Wolff's treatise on the formation of the intesti ... Read more

  • Quantity available: 1
16 pp. Small 8vo, self-bound. Altdorf: F.X. Z'graggen, 1831. A very rare pamphlet on political freedom by Geiger (1755-1843), a Catholic priest and professor of theology in Lucerne. In 1788, he conspired with the Marquis de Vérac to restore Louis XVI to the throne. After being released from his professorship, Geiger became a journalist and wrote numerous polemical pieces on church history, Catholicism, and contemporary political issues including free speech. He founded the Schweizerische Kirchenzeitung, a Catholic theological periodical, which began publication in 1832 and is still issued. In the present work, he offers a concise history of liberty from the time of the ancient Greeks to its contemporary manifestations in France and Germany. 23 full-page & 11 double-page woodcut colored illus. 22; 19;15 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers, each decorated on the covers with what appear to be stencilled nature motifs, orig. block-printed vignette labels pasted on upper covers, new stitching. [Japan]: n.d. [but WorldCat suggests 1861-64]. This set is composed of the first two volumes of the second series and the third volume of the first series of this superbly illustrated shunga parody of The Tale of Genji. There seems to be no surviving complete set of the three-volume first series, and we can trace only two sets of the complete three-volume second series (at the Royal Ontario Museum and the International Resource Center for Japanese Studies). Our set covers chapters 28-36 (Vol. I of the second series); chapters 37-45 (Vol. II of the second series); and chapters 19-27 (Vol. III of the first series). A complete set would include all 54 chapters, but none seem to exist. This is a very late shunga an ... Read more

Folding handcolored engraved frontispiece, two engraved plates (one folding & heightened in red), one folding plate of printed music, & music printing in the text. xii, 52 pp., one leaf of errata. 8vo, cont. marbled semi-stiff boards (spine a little defective), uncut. Erfurt: Beyer & Maring, 1800. First edition of this attractive and fascinating book which relates harmony to colors; it is very much a product of early German Romanticism. Dalberg (1760-1812), was an author, composer, and aesthetician. He was "born into a noble family...though physically deformed, he was a virtuoso pianist...He studied composition with Ignaz Holzbauer and travelled extensively in Italy and England. His works about music and his compositions were published regularly in his lifetime and were regarded seriously by professionals... "Dalberg's writings cover such diverse subjects as meteorology, penal law and translations of works on oriental subjects. This wide range of interest that hints at t ... Read more

6 p.l. (first leaf a blank), 420 pp., one leaf of errata. 8vo, fine cont. polished mottled calf, flat spine nicely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Bern: "In Verlag der neuen Buchhandlung," 1771. First edition, and a very fine copy, printed on superior paper. In his old age, Haller turned to fiction and wrote three philosophical romances - Usong (1771), Alfred (1773), and Fabius und Cato (1774) - in which he drew upon his political experience and expounded his ideas of government. In Usong, Haller describes a Persian monarchy ruled benevolently by an enlightened despot. In this utopian novel, Haller outlines the merits of despotism. A very fine copy.

One folding printed table. 1 p.l., 46 pp., one leaf of errata. Large 4to, orig. semi-stiff drab boards (extremities a bit rubbed). Leipzig: C.T. Rabenhorst, 1796. A remarkable discovery: this is essentially a workbook of the young and precocious Carl Friedrich Gauss, signed and dated by him "C. F. Gauss Sept. 7, 1796" on the inner front cover, at which time he was a 19-year old student in Göttingen. Gauss has not only studied the text carefully, making several corrections to the text, but has also made use of two blank pages at the end to carry out exercises (described in detail below). Mathematical manuscripts of Gauss are of the greatest rarity on the market, especially from his early formative years. Moritz von Prasse (1769-1814), was the son of Johann Moritz Prasse, who worked as a mediator in the Seven Years' War at the Court of Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg (and according to some sources may have been her lover). Two double-page plates & 80 engravings in the text. 8 p.l., 196, [16] pp. Folio, orig. carta rustica (covers a little soiled & spotted, first few leaves a little dampstained in outer lower corner). Rome: G.F. Buagni, 1696. First edition and a fine fresh copy of this finely illustrated work on baroque hydraulics. Fontana (1638-1714), was the most important Roman architect of his generation. This book "emerges from an actual design problem. The practical source for this theoretical work was the project for the raising of the water level of Lake Bracciano, necessary since the second fountain in Saint Peter's square, built by Bernini under Pope Clement X, was to be fed with water brought from this lake... "In the three parts of Acque correnti, Fontana takes up a wide range of empirical and theoretical issues. In his discussion of the behavior of water, Fontana challenges Galileo's theory of flotation, positing water as heavier than earth. The technique of moving water through ... Read more

[Japan: mid-Edo]. This handsome scroll depicts in great detail two Japanese hand looms used to create complex patterns of silk brocade and birodo (velvet). The greatly enlarged illustrations are inspired by images in the first volume of Akisato's Miyako meisho zue (1786), a famous guide to Kyoto. Nishijin, a district of Kyoto, was famous for its traditional textile production, employing highly specialized weaving techniques to obtain spectacular designs and effects. As we unroll the scroll, the first loom we encounter is the sorahikibata, an overhead draw loom, which was used to produced high-quality silks with complicated designs. This loom, invented in China in the 6th or 7th centuries (or before), required two operators, pictured here: the weaver and an assistant who manages the figure harness. The weaver is employing several heddles, which are controlled by his feet. A third person is also shown, inspecting the threads. The Chinese-invented draw loom, modified by the Japanese, enhanced an ... Read more

[Klein-Schwechat: 1881]. An elaborate album of photographs of drawings of the celebrated brewery at Klein-Schwechat, founded in 1632, and today one of the leading breweries of Austria, producing a lager, a light smooth premium beer called Hopfenperle, and a super-premium called Steffl. The album was prepared for the renowned Viennese brewer August Deiglmayer (1827-83), who was at that time, managing director of the brewery and one of the great innovators of 19th century brewing. Deiglmayer spent much of his professional career at the Klein-Schwechat brewery. The drawings were executed at the request of Georg Wieninger (1832-87), scion of the Schärding family of brewers. Reproduced here in photographs, the drawings depict a number of the imperial-style buildings of the brewery, set around a series of courtyards, which today still more resembles a grand country estate more than a brewery. The first plate consists of a calligraphic title "Erinnerung an Klein-Schwechat" in a hop-vine border. ... Read more
