Description:
Boston, 1762. 118pp. Half title present but detached. Disbound. Else Very Good. This is a seminal work, not only in Chauncy's long repertoire of publications, but also in Colonial Americans' struggle to prevent domination by the Episcopal Church and to nurture their own democratic religious institutions. As DAB notes, "Chauncy devoted nine years to contending against Episcopal claims, beginning with his Dudleian Lecture of 1762 [this piece]..." Here he tells his audience, "You are, by this time, at no loss to know the design of the present discourse; that it is to vindicate the New-England churches in their method of ordination..." Unlike the church in England, where people "scarce know what it is to have pastors of their own chusing...the New-England churches, blessed be God, possess and exercise the right of electing their pastors in the most ample manner of any in the whole christian world. May they ever 'stand fast in this liberty'...!" FIRST EDITION. Evans 9089. Sabin 12331. ESTC W29647.

Description:
[Washington, 1848. 8pp, caption title (as issued). Folded folio leaf, untrimmed. Rubberstamp at blank upper margin. Good+. Supposedly angered at his Party's failure to nominate him as its candidate in 1844, Van Buren bolted to the new Free Soil Party in 1848, a precursor of the Republicans. This document exposes Van Buren's doughface past: Until now, "no man had been more obsequious to the South, or more subservient to slavery, than Martin Van Buren." The record is reviewed, in exquisite detail, to show Van Buren's support of slavery. His convenient turnabout is mere hypocrisy. Free Soil material is significant because it presages the dissolution of the Democratic Party, the rise of the Republicans, and the crisis of the Union. FIRST EDITION. Wise & Cronin 113. Boston: Printed by Rogers and Fowle, in Queen-Street, 1748. 27, [1 blank] pp. Disbound, with the half title. Light scattered foxing. Very Good. Bound in modern half black cloth and marbled paper over boards. Owner's rubberstamp on front pastedown. One of several sermons printed during 1748 on this fire, which destroyed public records and "other useful and valuable Writings." Prentice offers an unusually interesting explanation of the "Injustice and Unrighteousness" which caused the fire. The cause is "an uncertain and sinking Paper-Medium which circulating through the Land, doth I fear, spread Injustice...and sadly corrupt and endanger the whole Political Body." For "Men, finding the Currency sinking, and having no Way to right themselves therefor, but by altering and adjusting the Prices of Things, to what they suppose to be the Decrease, of the Value of the Bills, and so being left at Liberty to judge and determine their own Cause...are apt, in every Advance, to rise too high, in their…

Description:
New York, 1829. 16pp. Stitched, scattered foxing, light wear. Good+. The 'Old Citizen' defends President John Quincy Adams several days before the reins of power passed to his successor and bitter rival, Andrew Jackson. Harrison Gray Otis, William Sullivan, Henry Cabot, and nine other Massachusetts Federalists recently attacked President Adams for a pamphlet Adams had written "more than twenty years ago," criticizing New England Federalists for their excessive attachment to England, their desire to secure "a dissolution of the Union," and for opposing the acquisition of Louisiana. Calling Otis et al "Monarchists in the East", 'Old Citizen' excoriates them for their views on Louisiana, their opposition to the 1808 Embargo, and the War of 1812. "The present attack on J.Q. Adams, is now seen to be a MERE SPECK in the magnitude of their designs against their country's honour." Their absurd preference "(to suit present purposes)" for "supreme power in the States"-- which he calls "the mania of state…

[Washington: C.W. Fenton, 1848. Caption title [as issued], disbound, 16pp. Light soil and wear, Good+. At head of title: "PLEASE CIRCULATE." A Whig argument against executive tyranny, alleged to be the practice of Democratic Presidents, particularly Andrew Jackson. Lewis Cass, the Democratic presidential candidate, will exercise the veto power promiscuously, thus destroying "the very first principle of our Republican System- THE RIGHT OF THE MAJORITY TO GOVERN." Because "every minority government is in principle a despotism...that should be enough to excite in every American freeman an intense jealousy of the Veto power, and an unyielding and sleepless opposition to its improper exercise." Drake, originally from Cincinnati but who became a United States Senator from Missouri, reviews the history of the veto, in England and America, particularly under Jackson. The Whig candidate, Zachary Taylor, will defend majority rule, and assure government of the people. FIRST EDITION. Sabin 20817. Not in…

Charleston: Letter-Press of E.C. Councell, 119 East Bay, 1850. 16pp, disbound. Light foxing starting at edges, else clean. Very Good. Dedicating his Discourse to Governor Seabrook of South Carolina, Reverend Barnwell denounces the Compromise of 1850, champions South Carolina's secessionist cause, and gives free rein to his fire-eating Southern nationalism. He warns of the "covert, but decided menace on the part of those in authority, to prohibit, by force, the exercise of her unquestionable right, to resume the powers delegated to the General Government, and secede from the Union, if she sees fit." The "General Government is a Usurper"; it holds together Sections lacking in empathy. Exhibit A is the North's failure to enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. The North will "use the whole power of the Government for its own aggrandizement, and the destruction of an institution which we believe to be of vital importance to our welfare." Convinced of "the righteousness of our cause," he argues, "to take away…
