The basis for the 1971 cult western directed by Edwin Sherin and starring Burt Lancaster (as Valdez), Susan Clark, Frank Silvera and Hector Elizondo. A Mexican-Amercan sheriff must resort to violence against a powerful rancher in order to get just compensation for the pregnant Indian widow of a wrongly-killed black man. Thought by many to be the Authors finest work. A Very Scarce Title

The fragile price-clipped VG+ D/W is completely unrestored with a bit of wear, chipping and toning (chiefly to the head and tail of the spine and to the corners) not affecting any lettering and with a couple of minor, imperceptible archival tape repairs to verso. A former owner's neat name (and Oxford College - Oriel) to the front paste-down and offsetting to both the front and rear end-papers otherwise VG indeed. In the VERY RARE D/W priced 12s 6d net to the inside flap (as called for). The D/W has benefitted from highly skilled restoration by one of the World's leading paper conservators to a 2 cm loss at the head of the spine and 2.2 cm (at its deepest) at the base of the spine. A further chip just affecting the publisher's logo at the left hand edge of the spine has also been restored. The D/W now shows as a VG+ example.
