London: Saunders and Otley, Conduit Street, 1839.. Octavo, pp. [i-iii] iv-v [vi-vii] viii [1] 2-309 [310-312: blank], original green cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold and blind, all edges untrimmed, yellow coated endpapers. First edition. Loosely connected short tales about the supernatural figures and festivals of Welsh legend, including the Tolaeth and Cyhiraeth. The tales, thirty-one in all, are a bit sketchy, but definitely count as fiction, with characters, plot and dialogue. Glamorgan is the southernmost county of Wales, the most populous and, though not yet at the time of this book's publication, it would become the most industrialized part of the country, encompassing the two cities of Swansea and Cardiff. The book has been curiously overlooked by bibliographers, both of the genre and the period. Block, The English Novel 1740-1850, p. 195. Early owner's signature in pencil on front paste-down. Spine leaned, corners soft, a small faint damp stain on the front ... Read more
