Paris: Éditions de la Revue Verve, 1940. Complete issue of the French art magazine, September-November, 1940, Flexible Boards. The dust jacket is a lithograph after a cutout by Matisse that was created for this issue of Verve. Art historian Margaret Culbertson argues that the cover was an early act of French resistance to Nazi Germany: "Work on the issue started during the ominous summer before, as the world waited to see if Hitler would respect the Munich Agreement. The magazine’s editor, Efstratios Tériade, commissioned the artist Henri Matisse to design the cover.The aging artist, with anxiety fueled by memories of WWI, regularly visited Tériade’s Paris office. One of 100 images included in Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War, published in Washington in 1865-1866 by Philp & Solomons. Image size (exclusive of lettering and margins) is 6 7/8" by 8 7/8". Mounted on the original card with letterpress printing of the caption and information about the photograph. Also present is the original text page containing Gardner's description that accompanied this photo. The photograph shows the interior of Confederate lines in May 1865 near Petersburg, Virginia. There were two slightly separate versions of the book, and this photograph is from the first issue, as is demonstrated by the caption "Incidents of the War" on the mount. Washington D. C.: Congress of the United States, 1856. Images is 6 1/4" by 9 1/4" on a sheet that measures 9" by 11 1/4". Now archivally matted (14" by 16") and ready for framing; Original lithograph by the German-American artist Wilhelm Heine (1827-1885). It was published in 1856 to accompany the narrative of the Perry Expedition to Japan. This particular view shows American boats mapping the harbor after being expressly denied permission to do so by the Japanese government. The lithograph is in near fine condition.. First Edition. This particular example features pinup art by Rolf Armstrong and includes his printed signature. Staunton, Virginia: Jed. Hotchkiss, 1896. Printed by The Norris Peters Co. in Washington, D.C. Designed and published by Jedediah Hotchkiss (1824-1898), the Confederate cartographer who spent the post-civil war years promoting the industrialization of the state of Virginia. This 1896 map represents one of his failed projects: the Virginians Railway, a railroad which he promoted to tie together ports, iron ore mines, smelters, and manufacturing centers in Virginia and to ship iron to the rest of the country. Investors were not interested in the low-quality iron ore in Virginia; so, the railroad was not built. The map appears to be rare--WorldCat locates only one copy (that one at the University of Virginia). The folded map is in near-fine condition: clean and bright, with barely a hint of edgewear. First printing of this profusely illustrated (with color photographs) story of the Virginian Railway, which hauled coal from southern West Virginia to Hampton Roads harbor in Virginia. Beginning in 1989, the author set out to photograph every interesting location on what remained of the Virginian Railway's tracks. After two years of travel and photography, that goal was accomplished; the result was this book. It is SIGNED (without inscription) and dated by the author on the first blank page. Pasadena, California: National Aeronautics and Space Administration, 1977. Original booklet released by NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) intended both to inform the public and to promote the Voyager program.  Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were spacecraft launched by NASA in 1977 to explore Jupiter, Saturn, and their moons.  The information radioed back to Earth was so significant that the project was refunded for the spacecraft to continue on to Uranus and Neptune.  Once again, the Voyagers proved capable of going beyond the original mission and are now launched to go beyond the Solar System into interstellar space.  Their capacity to send information back to Earth is expected to last another 10 years, then proceeding silently toward the stars.  Who knows if they actually will meet up with Captain Kirk and the starship Enterprise. Paris: Probably Published by Clouzard & Soulier, 1858. Paris, circa 1858. 3/4 inches by 6 3/4 inches. Circa 1852-1856 Claude-Marie Ferrier photographed a number of European buildings and views, including this one. Although Ferrier was a competitor of Clouzard & Soulier, they did publish some of his 1850s images among the earliest 2-glass stereoviews before Ferrier merged his business with theirs. Before he formed a partnership with Claude-Marie Ferrier in 1959, Charles Soulier and his associate Athanse Clouzard produced a large number of glass stereoviews.
