Description:
Vienna: Kaiserlich-koniglichen Hof- und Staatsdruckerei [for Alfred Holder], 1886. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 volumes, large quarto (28 x 22 cm). VIII, 326; VIII, 360 pp., with 2 chromolithographic plates and more than 250 illustrations of views, scenes, art, pagan rituals and folk customs and costume, sacred architecture, domestic architecture, flora and fauna, jewelry, and much more. Original publisher's gold cloth, elaborately embossed and gilt. An absolutely beautiful copy. "VIENNA and LOWER AUSTRIA" from the famous "Osterreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild" series, complete sets of which are now unobtainable. Initiated in 1883 and largely compiled by the Crown Prince Rudolf himself, the entire work extended to 24 volumes (1885-1902). Ultimately the series contained a total of 12,596 text pages, 4529 illustrations, and 587 different articles, of which 432 were written by co-contributors. The present volume is a veritable encyclopedia of late nineteenth-century Vienna,… Read more

Description:
New Haven: Yale University Library, 1989. 8vo. Complete issue: 96 pp., some illustrations in the text. Original printed wrappers (front cover somewhat stained). Complete issue (not an extract or offprint). Of signal interest is Laurence Witten's discussion of his purchase and eventual sale (to Paul Mellon, for Yale) of the so-called "Vinland Map." This infamous map is reported to have been bound at some point with a 15th-century manuscript of the so-called "Tartar Relation" and a 15th-century manuscript of Vincent de Beauvais' "Speculum." In his recollection, which is presented in exactingly detail, Witten blatantly contradicts himself. On p. 19 Witten claims "I decided to withdraw it [the Tartar Relation manuscript] from business inventory and give it to my wife." We are unable to comprehend why anyone would need to do that, but in any event, on: p. 29 "Cora Witten [his wife] paid the obligations agree to at the time of her PURCHASE of the manuscript" [emphasis ours]. Here is a scholar of some note… Read more

Description:
London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co, 1929. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. xii, 330 pp. Illustrated with 8 full-page plates. Original red cloth (lacking dust-wrapper). Spine and top of back cover sunned, two tiny holes in the cloth near spine-title resemble a cute little vampire bite. In very good condition, the text clean, unmarked, and NOT foxed in contrast with other copies on the market (with or without Summers' signature). NOT ex-library! Excellent copy of the first edition, with a tipped-in bookplate SIGNED by the incomparable Montague Summers, a self-professed Catholic priest, occultist, scholar-bibliographer, researcher of sex psychology, and eccentric medievalist. Occult books by Montague Summers which bear his signature are rare on the market. Despite the notoriety of the author, "The Vampire in Europe" is in fact a very useful and detailed investigation of the subject in all its ramifications; as a record of folk beliefs about vampirism, it remains a work of continued reference. Description:
Richmond (?) Virginia, 1787. Unbound. Very good. Document printed on vellum and completed in manuscript. Signed by then-Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Beverley Randolph (29 May 1787). Size: 15" x 12" (worn along folds, affecting legibility of one line of manuscript text, soiled); traces of red wax seal. On verso in MS: "Owen Jarrett 172 Acres Greenbrier County." A little known Colonial Virginia imprint, of which no example appear to be in UVA. The document attests to the receipt by the Treasury of the Commonwealth of Virginia "for consideration of the Ancient Composition of One Pound Sterling, paid by one Owen Jarrett into the Treasure of the Commenwealth." The payment is for "adjusting the titles to compensate lands in the District of Augusta, Botetourt and Greenbrier." The 172 acres in question was located in Greenbrier County (in present-day West Virginia) and bounded by Muddy Creek. The life of Owen Jarrett (born 1760/1761 in Berkshire County, Pennsylvania, died 1859 [sic] in Kanawha County,… Read more

Vol. 1, Fascicle 1, containing the first 30 plates from one of the great facsimiles of specimen pages of incunabula. Of great interest to students of incunabula and their teachers. Herein are reproductions of 15th century printed pages, each one depicted in full (not reduced); below appear their respective ALPHABETS in the original fonts of type, all identified and classified. The work was issued to illustrate Haebler's 5-volume "Typenrepertorium" (1904-1925) as well as the emerging "Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke." Our Fascicle 1 contains 30 such plates, with reproductions of pages from the presses well-known and little-known, such as Anton Sorg and Johann Schonsperger (Augsburg), Cornelis van Zierikzee and also the Printer of the 1487 Elegant. Description:
Pittsburgh, 1952. Small 8vo. Six-ring notebook, dark brown roan covers (worn) divided by 5 tabs. Title + 35 leaves (text typed on rectos only). Preserved in a 4-flap lig-free case. Highly curious vernacular library catalogue of a Pittsburgh logger, being his private collection of books on lumber and forestry, thoughtfully arranged. The contents were typed on 35 separate leaves and inserted into a six-ring notebook. This is clearly Diebold's home-made catalogue of his own lumber library; for instance Diebold describes Capt. Barker's 1903 "Lake Forest As I Have Known Them" as being "autographed by the author." Diebold continues: "Autobiography of a lumberman and guide in Northern New England. Good technical descriptions of working logs through the lakes with booms." There are 26 DETAILED descriptions of logging books dating from 1851 to 1952; following is an index (short titles) consisting of 9 leaves arranged into categories: Forestry, Anecdotes, Technical, and History. Alfred J. Diebold (1879-1966),… Read more

Description:
Wyoming. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Tall narrow photo album containing 52 color photographs (all 3.5" x 5") inserted into an assemblage of 60 sleeves (numbered 2-61), all with typed captions (and thus 8 photos are no longer present), ca. 50% of the photos are aerial views. Curious 1980 photo album showing desolate landscapes and topography of the Wind River Indian Reservation and environs, many being aerial views. Well documented are the rivers that run through and around the Reservation (Wind River, Little Wind River, Pope Agie River), the flatlands (Bighorn Flat), lakes (Bull Lake and Dam, Ocean Lake), creeks (Willow, Owl and Crow Creeks), irrigation canals, mountains, empty reservoir behind Anchor Dam, Arapahoe Ranch, Fort Washakie, and more. These photographs were taken by David Keith Todd (1923-2006), a renowned hydrologist. The album's original intent seems to have been as a record of potential water resources and possible development on the reservation, but the results are… Read more

London: Victoria and Albert Museum, 1961. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. 33 pp. With 79 illustrations on 72 pp. Original green cloth. One of the few illustrated guides to the historic and artistic bindings in the V&A, and by far the most informative (apart from Weale's pioneering work of 1898 which was illustrated only with drawings). Harthan's long introduction on the development of bookbinding style is still very useful.
