Author was born in Lampasas County in 1887. In 1912 he worked on the Martin Ranch near Sheffield and witnessed some of the events in the last outrage of the Black Jack Ketchum gang, told for the first time in this book. He served in France during WWI until 1919 with his veterinary unit. His new home would be in the Big Bend where his parents had moved to Terlingua in Brewster County. He became one of the last ranchmen to use the free range. He served in WWII as a Captain his unit was made up of men from all over the Big Bend region. The unit was 90 percent Latin Americans. He gives the first account of the Dominguez gang, he writes of Will James. He died in 1953.
