Triple decker first edition, in publisher's cloth, of one of the bestselling books of the nineteenth century, which is largely disfavored at present due to the virulent anti-Catholicism and racist depictions of South Americans. Stirling: W. Macnie, Bookseller, 1831. Original self wrappers but with leaves separated. Good.. A charming provincial chapbook from local Stirling chapbook printer William Macnie. A short collection of ballads. With a vignette on the title page of a gentleman cutting down a tree with a very large axe. Macnie apparently produced around 110 chapbooks under his own imprint during his ownership of the firm previously owned by the Randalls. 12mo. 8pp. Atkinson, Street Literature of the Long Nineteenth Century: Producers, Sellers, Consumers, pg. 170; SBTI.

A good plus copy in contemporary leather which is rather heavily worn and chipping, excised signature on front free endpaper, staining/browning to some pages, but overall a tight clean copy.. The journals of an early abolitionist, Woolman's journals have been among the only continuously published works in North America since the American Revolution. Given that this is a ten volume set, additional shipping will be quoted at cost.. Limited edition, being number 492/526 of the "Centenary Edition." An autograph letter signed by Browning is tipped in volume one. As other examine copies of the Centenary Edition include tipped in letters, it is certainly possible this was done by a publisher or early bookseller. 10 volumes. 8vo.

Collected works of Congreve published by Baskerville, the noted printer and type designer, featuring an engraved portrait frontispiece as well as five plates preceding some of the respective works. Contents include The Old Batchelor, The Double Dealer, Love for Love, The Way of the World, The Mourning Bride, The Judgment of Paris, Semele, Poems Upon Several Occasions, and A Letter to Mr. Dennis. In Virginia Woolf's Night and Day (1919), character William Rodney, with a tumbler of whiskey in one hand, in his other hand offers his guest "the Baskerville Congreve . . . About very good in contemporary mottled calf which is rubbed and scuffed, particularly the spines, hinges cracked, and foxing and toning throughout.

Substantial wear to leather bindings, but otherwise very good with prior owner name in ink to title pages but contents otherwise rather bright.. Largely lost to obscurity in modernity, Shenstone was of significant influence in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Robert Burns referred to him as of of his favorite authors, and later referenced Shenstone in the Kilmarnock edition of his poems, with utmost praise, calling him "that celebrated poet whose divine Elegies do honour our language, our nation, and our species."
