Description:
Scarce first edition of Rand's first novel, one of only 3000 copies printed. Astonished by the intellectual trends of America's "Red decade," immigrant Rand set out to uphold the American ideals of individualism and freedom. Rand resolved to expose the "noble ideals" of Communism through the story of three young people whose lives are sacrificed by an all-powerful state. Originally titled "Airtight," We the Living was not a commercial success. Eighteen months after its release, the novel was out of print. Rand's royalties from the first American edition amounted to $100! This volume contains Rand's original UNrevised text. Original publisher's boards with strong hinges. Soiling to boards and some writing inside. A good copy of a very scarce book, priced accordingly. Book#P5a126. $650. We carry the world's largest selection of rare, signed, and manuscript Ayn Rand in private hands on the planet!

Description:
UNbeatable Ayn Rand value! First Edition, First Printing of We the Living, opening: "Petrograd smelt of carbolic acid." Ayn Rand's first sentence to an American audience, the reek of that powerful disinfectant, used to abate the spread of lice-borne diseases, suggests the squalor that engulfs Petrograd -- and communism. Originally titled "Airtight," We the Living was not a commercial success; eighteen months after its release, the novel was out of print. After the success of Atlas Shrugged in 1957, Rand revised We the Living and Random House issued the revised edition. This is the UNrevised edition, difficult to acquire in collectible condition. And the price rocks! A very good copy with less than usual soiling to boards and spine. Previous owner's neat signature and date on front pastedown. Collect Ayn Rand! Book #C1114. $975. We offer the world's largest selection of rare, signed, and manuscript Ayn Rand in private hands.

SIGNED EXCEPTIONAL ASSOCIATION: VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF RAND'S FIRST NOVEL, INSCRIBED TO ARCHITECT ELY JACQUES KAHN, RAND's ADVISOR FOR THE FOUNTAINHEAD
RAND, Ayn. We the Living. New York: Macmillan, 1936. Octavo, original cloth; housed in a custom half navy morocco slipcase and chemise. $33,500.
Scarce first edition of Rand's first novel, one of only 3000 copies printed, a wonderful presentation association copy, inscribed by the author to architect Ely Jacques Kahn, for whom Rand worked as an unpaid assistant in 1937, while researching the profession for the book that was to become The Fountainhead: "To Ely Jacques Kahn—gratefully—Ayn Rand."
According to Barbara Branden in her biography The Passion of Ayn Rand (143-44), in 1937 "Ayn decided to spend a few months working in an architect's office, without pay, in order to become familiar with the day-to-day activities of the profession. Through a friend she met the famous New York architect Ely Jacques Kahn and he agreed to her plan… Ayn… Read more

The reek of powerful disinfectant, to abate the spread of lice-borne diseases, captures the squalor engulfing Petrograd -- and communism. After the success of Atlas Shrugged in 1957, Rand revised We the Living and Random House issued her revised edition. First printing of the Revised Edition, a good copy, with fraying edges and tape residue. Front (blank) flyleaf shows a penciled one-line address; rear flyleaf has stamped address and "Sold," three times. The complete, UNclipped jacket ($4.95 top; 1/59 bottom) still bright, a bit wavy. Some edgewear and toning. A great way to begin an Ayn Rand collection--as I began mine with this copy. Book #C3106. $47. We offer the world's… Read more
