Signed by the author to verso of front cover. This book comes from the collection of Walter Stein, a British writer, literary critic and Catholic moral philosopher. Born in 1922, Stein was a Jewish refugee from pre-war Austria, educated by the Quakers in York and eventually a Catholic convert who worked in the Department of Extramural Studies at Leeds University. London: Mandarin Paperbacks, 1993. Inscribed copy of the the source-work for Karen Blixen's Out of Africa - with extensive authorial ephemera. Very good paperback edition inscribed on the title page 'For Lionel Carley, with gratitude - how strange - Exits and Entrances.... Errol' together with a long typed letter to Carley, August 1995, thanking him for a 'thoroughly civilised amalgam' of an open-house visit and promising to 'be in touch from Kenya....', a postcard sent by Errol from Kenya and a further Christmas card from her. Trzebinski, b1936, is a British writer of books on the Happy Valley set of colonial Kenya. Her correspondent, Lionel Carley (1936-2021) was an archivist and writer on music, notably Delius - both were based in Gloucestershire. London: Faber and Faber Ltd, 1950. A very smart copy with T S Eliot's signature in blue ink on a small oblong of paper tipped onto the title page. A crisp copy of the 6th edition from 1950, near fine in a near fine jacket. Ownership signature from 1958 to the flyleaf over an erased earlier inscription. Eliot's signature is not difficult to find on limited editions but desirable on trade editions of his works. Inscribed with 'Prayers' from a saint - John Henry Newman's Letter to Pusey inscribed in his hand on the verso of the title page: 'with the kindest wishes & prayers of the Author Decr 10. 1872'. Collection of 9 Anglo-Catholic church pamphlets bound in contemporary half calf with marbled boards, spine label lettered in gilt on maroon leather, some rubbing to the leather. Light brown coated endpapers with the ownership inscription of 'Isabel J Crewe 1878' (possibly the long-lived daughter - 1830-1929 - of Sir George Crewe, 8th Baronet and owner of Calke Abbey in Derbyshire). Newman's Letter is the first item in the collection, some brown spotting to text and inscribed by the future Saint some 6 years after the 160 page work's publication. The second work by Newman appears penultimate in the collection: A Letter Addressed to His Grace the Duke of Norfolk, on Occasion of Mr Gladstone's Recent Expostulation. Otley, Yorkshire: William Walker & Sons, 1938. Old Moore's Almanac for 1938 with a special feature on the coronation of King George VI by Sidney R Campion. Very good in illustrated card wrappers, red stains to the upper cover, one corner of the lower cover torn off, the binding is firm and the pamphlet is complete with clean text including many advertisements for health products from pills and ointments to cures for rheumatism, asthma and diabetes. 1938

London: Enitharmon Press, 1970. pp 14 A signed first edition of Leonard Clark's poetry collection 'Walking with Trees' bound in green cloth and printed on cream antique laid paper, with a pretty frontispiece etching by Samuel Palmer. Canadian Pacific Railway, 1907. pp 36 A pamphlet published by the Canadian Pacific Railway encouraging "energetic and enterprising" Scots to emigrate to Canada. This description of the country is by a journalist from The Scotsman newspaper who was invited by the president of the railway company to make a tour and report on "the progress and resources of the Dominion". Illustrated with black and white photographs. Very good in coloured card wrappers, creased and nicked to the edges but bright and complete. Very good in red cloth, spotting to edges and end papers, the binding is firm, the pages bright. Tipped in card which is inscribed "Dear Stopes-Roe, Take this as a small Xmas gift" and goes on to describe War and Peace as "one of the most beautiful and profound novels ever written". The tiny script is neat but the initials of the writer are indistinct. This book comes from the collection of the scientist and pioneer birth-control campaigner Marie Stopes (1880-1958) which was inherited by her son the philosopher Harry Stopes Roe (1924-2014) and sold following the death of his widow Mary Stopes Roe in May of this year. Mary was herself an academic and author, the daughter of the engineer and inventor of the bouncing bomb, Sir Barnes Wallis. 1951

Fine in red cloth, buff spine with gilt lettering, protected by a cellophane wrapper within a green card slip case. This high quality publication was a gift edition inscribed by the author "To Miss Laura Delano with compliments Myron C Taylor April 12th 1947." This book comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 - 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The book is a good copy with the ownership signature of 'E Bibby Holmegarth' and the chatty letters from 1938-1950 conveying congratulations to Bibby on various landmarks in his life before and after the war. Bissekers was Leys School headmaster from 1919 to1934. Good 1932

Very good in black cloth with white spine lettering, the pages are clean; in a good dust jacket, chipped to both panels and spine. A fascinating resource for students of climate change. Llanelly: Unpublished, 1943. Hardcover. Very Good. [ff] 100 Substantial original typescript on the origins of Welsh place and house names and their translations into English which was presented with some flourish to Llanelly Public Library. Foolscap paper in red and black, annotated throughout by the author, firmly held in a Perry Spring Binder. Four letters and a dedication page precede the text in which the author who lived at Station House, Bynea offered his work and was subsequently delighted to deposit this copy with the Borough Librarian, J E Thomas who praises 'this painstaking production' which will 'be carefully preserved.. It is our custom to inform the local newspapers of important donations...' Lyons describes his work as containing 'over 2000 [place names], together with well over 600 Prefixes, Suffixes, Derivatives....' gives a list of his authorities and summarises his subject as 'an intensely interesting study... Wales is an ancient country. It is a country of romance....' Very Good 1943

Catalogue of colours, chemicals, glazes, vitreous enamels, minerals and raw materials for the pottery, tile, brick, glass and vitreous enamelling on metal industries. Extensively illustrated in black, white and colour with product photographs. Blind ownership stamp of Harry Horlock Stringer on first page. With leaflet advertising Purbeck Pottery courses laid in. Illustrated paper over board, with amateur tape repairs to spine, but binding remains entirely sound. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity.
