Errol' together with a long typed letter to Carley, August 1995, thanking him for a 'thoroughly civilised amalgam' of an open-house visit and promising to 'be in touch from Kenya....', a postcard sent by Errol from Kenya and a further Christmas card from her. Trzebinski, b1936, is a British writer of books on the Happy Valley set of colonial Kenya. Her correspondent, Lionel Carley (1936-2021) was an archivist and writer on music, notably Delius - both were based in Gloucestershire. Collection of 9 Anglo-Catholic church pamphlets bound in contemporary half calf with marbled boards, spine label lettered in gilt on maroon leather, some rubbing to the leather. Light brown coated endpapers with the ownership inscription of 'Isabel J Crewe 1878' (possibly the long-lived daughter - 1830-1929 - of Sir George Crewe, 8th Baronet and owner of Calke Abbey in Derbyshire). Very good in red cloth, spotting to edges and end papers, the binding is firm, the pages bright. Tipped in card which is inscribed "Dear Stopes-Roe, Take this as a small Xmas gift" and goes on to describe War and Peace as "one of the most beautiful and profound novels ever written". The tiny script is neat but the initials of the writer are indistinct. This book comes from the collection of the scientist and pioneer birth-control campaigner Marie Stopes (1880-1958) which was inherited by her son the philosopher Harry Stopes Roe (1924-2014) and sold following the death of his widow Mary Stopes Roe in May of this year. Mary was herself an academic and author, the daughter of the engineer and inventor of the bouncing bomb, Sir Barnes Wallis. 1951

[ff] 100 Substantial original typescript on the origins of Welsh place and house names and their translations into English which was presented with some flourish to Llanelly Public Library. Foolscap paper in red and black, annotated throughout by the author, firmly held in a Perry Spring Binder. Four letters and a dedication page precede the text in which the author who lived at Station House, Bynea offered his work and was subsequently delighted to deposit this copy with the Borough Librarian, J E Thomas who praises 'this painstaking production' which will 'be carefully preserved..
