Pegasus, New York, 1969. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. black titles spine; "the Civil War had an incalculably. traumatic effect on the. South and the Southern spirit, but it did not bring about the creation of a new South within a few short years. To the contrary, much of the Old South civilization survived the war and reconstruction and lived on into the twentieth century. Professor Eaton's brilliant and sensitive study begins with the formation of the Southern Confederacy and ends with the 1880's when men such as Henry Grady and Atticus Haygood were hailing the rise of the New South, The author explores the currents of social and cultural life that flowed on despite the disaster of a civil conflict - and de-emphasizes the military and political history that has been treated in depth elsewhere. However, he makes it clear that in the 1880's the Old South was by no means dead: it waned slowly and could not truly be called gone until the Depression years of the 1930 ... Read more

New English Library, London, 1985. Reprint. Paperback. Very Good/N/A. white titles spine; " It seemed a routine delivery job. The Waterbeach Village Society, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, 1984. First Edition. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. A newspaper of any kind cannot be relied upon to give a complete picture of life in a particular period and the Cambridge Chronicle was no exception. The ordinary, and much of the pleasanter side of life, of course, did not reach the paper and over the years the Waterbeach correspondents, the real authors of this book, reported a great amount of hardship and tragedy. There is no doubt that life during this period was pleasant for a few but for the majority times were hard in the extreme. For hours of work which occupied almost very daylight hour the labourer received a wage which was barely sufficient to provide bread for his family - let alone fuel and clothing. Unemployment was frequent and the dole unknown. Illness of any kind was a frightening' prospect and, if charity was not available, the end to a hard working life was the workhouse. Times Press Ltd./Longbooks, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1970. First Edition. Softcover. Fair Condition/No Dust Jacket. This Island, known officially to the English as the Isle of Man, has had many differing designations in the course of its long history and the one in official and general use today is surely the most ridiculous of the lot, taken at its apparent meaning in the English language - especially as women predominate over men in its population. There has recently been some controversy over it, and a claim that by adding a second "n" to Man the difficulty might be solved, but public opinion seemed to be that this minor change would involve a lot of trouble which was hardly worth while, so the spelling was left optional. Manx people themselves have a simpler way out of the difficulty; they call it in Manx Gaelic, Ellan Vannin. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 99 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Angus & Robertson, North Ryde, NSW, Australia, 1987. First Thus. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Fine Condition/Fine. Illustrator: Evert Ploeg . red end-papers; b/w. frontis. photo. of the author; In 1902, Jeannie Gunn, a Melbourne schoolteacher, went with her new husband to live on the remote Elsey cattle station near the Roper River in the Northern Territory. Though she spend little more than a year there, her experiences in the outback and her contact with the local Aborigines impressed her deeply, and on her return to Melbourne she set down her recollections in two books, We of the Never-Never and The Little Black Princess. These books have become classics of Australian literature, beloved by generations. Mrs. Gunn took a genuine interest in the Aborigines, however it is obvious she believed, as did most Europeans of the day, that other races should emulate the ways of the white man. That said, she had sympathy & true affection for the Aborigines at a time when these attitudes were sadly lacking ... Read more
