Very slight bumping to cornares and spine ends, one small scuff to top edge of rear panel. A near fine copy, lacking the extremely scarce dustwrapper. First edition. Clarkson Crane (1894-1971) attended Berkeley, and this campus novel, set in 1919 and featuring a homosexual English professor, seems based on his time there (although the professor in question has never been identified). The Western Shore was poorly reviewed, and its gay content (which is considerable) was almost entirely ignored. Only the poet and playwright Stephen Vincent Benet made any reference to it : in his review for the New York Herald Tribune he warned that the novel contained passages that 'might well prove distasteful.' Spine a little darkened, very slight bump to one corner, new price label ('NF 18') to rear panel, otherwise a near fine, unread copy. Line illustrations by Cocteau. First edition of this (uncredited) translation by Austryn Wainhouse of Cocteau's novel, which was first published in French in 1928 under the title Le Livre Blanc. (The definite article is retained on the half-title and title page of this edition, but the front cover uses 'A'). Two years after its publication this edition was suppressed by the French authorities. Kearney: 5.51.1

Pictorial price-clipped dustwrapper, a little worn at folds and internally strengthened, and with some slight chipping at spine ends. A very good copy. First edition. Originally entitled Lady In Waiting, the title was changed after printing when it was discovered that a book with that title had just been published. (This is explained in a printed note on the verso of the title-page). Originally published with a wraparound band explaining the change, not present on this copy.

First edition, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. This issue precedes the hardbound edition. This, Heaney's third full collection, is strangely scarce -- especially signed.

First edition. The second of five Francis Pettigrew titles. Cyril Hare was the pseudonym of Alfred Clark [1900-1958], a county court judge who turned to detective writing at the age of thirty-six. His novel Tragedy at Law (1942) has long been considered one of the finest detective novels set in the legal world, and has never been out of print. With a Bare Bodkin was published four years later, and draws on Clark's experience in the wartime civil service. T.S. Twelve portfolios, in b&w and colour, from twelve female photographers. First edition. Showcase for twelve female photographers, among them Alice Springs, Caroline Arber -- and the notorious Irina Ionesco, whose daughter has spent her entire adult life suing her, and whose work is an enduring testament to the incompetence of French social services.
