Description:
Montreal: Warbrooke Publishers, 1974. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. "Sholem Shtern was a poet, essayist, and teacher best known for his novels in verse depicting the life of Jewish immigrants in Canada. He was born in 1906/1907 in Tishevitz, a small town near Lublin, Poland. Shtern emigrated to Canada in 1927. Diagnosed with tuberculosis, he spent almost two years at the Mount Sinai Hospital in the Laurentians. His most well-known work, Dos Vayse Hoyz" or The White House was translated from the Yiddish by Max Rosenfeld and published in 1974. As Rosenfeld points out in his forward, this story is clearly autobiographical -The White House is the hospital that takes care of those who have the dreaded "white disease". A very good copy with showing some edge wear and a 2 cm closed tear at the back. [National Library of Canada]
