The McMillans, originally from St Louis, Missouri, had relocated to London and also owned a farm in Kenya.Gift inscription (from 1923) on front free endpaper. Front inner hinge starting to split. Endpapers a bit tanned and spotted. Very good indeed. Scarce.

Period binding in full black leather, raised bands, decorated gilt spine, gilt decoration on upper and lower covers. All edges gilt. This would appear to be one of several issues, the more common being one in two volumes. On the front pastedown is the armorial bookplate of the parliamentarian John Severn (1781-1875) of Penybent Hall, Radnorshire. Some rubbing to head and tail of spine and lower edges. Sporadic spotting to some of the plates. Very good.
