One very large folding lithographed map. 87 pp. 8vo, disbound. [Washington]: 1858. First edition of this fundamental western report, describing Beale's journey from San Antonio to Fort Tejon on the Colorado. The trip is famous in the annals of travel, since Beale's task was to deliver the camels the Army had imported as a desert transport corps to their station in the Arizona desert. The trip took them across Texas to El Paso, up to Albuquerque, then over to the Colorado. The very large (640 x 1220 mm.) map, "Preliminary Map of the Western Portion of the Reconnaissance and Survey for a Pacific Rail Road Route near the 35th Par...with additions showing the route of the proposed wagon road...," covers the country from the Rio Grande to the Colorado. Fine copy. The map loosely accompanies the book. ❧ Wagner-Camp 297. Wheat, Transmississippi, 939.

79 pp. Small 4to, orig. fine sheep (lower cover a little wormed), arms in gilt of the Elector of Bavaria, Maximilian I on upper cover, gilt border round sides, a.e.g. Munich: J. Lindauer, 1796. First edition of this scarce survey of the developments which had taken place in the previous fifty years in the application of electricity to medicine. Imhof (1758-1817), a member of the Saint Augustine order and of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, was professor of physics and mathematics at Munich and ducal librarian. He wrote a number of books on electricity, chemistry, and mathematics. In the present work, Imhof describes the advances in medical electricity made by many of the great physicists of the 18th century, including Musschenbroek, Watson, Cavallo, Bertholon, Galvani, Volta, and many others (including little-known scientists). A very pretty copy from the Wittelsbach library of the dukes and kings of Bavaria. ❧ Poggendorff, I, 1169. Ronalds 254. Not in Wheeler Gift Cat. Presentation l ... Read more

Two full-page woodcuts serving as frontispieces & a full-page woodcut on final leaf. 1 p.l., 38, 38, 29 folding leaves. Three parts in one vol. 8vo, orig. blue wrappers, manuscript title label on upper cover, new stitching. [Guangzhou]: Yao Shi, [1679]. A very rare illustrated printing of the translation by Kumarajiva of the Vimalakirti Sutra, one of the fundamental texts of Chinese Buddhism. Kumarajiva (344-413), Buddhist monk, scholar, missionary, and translator, who came from the Silk Road kingdom of Kucha, was famous for his encyclopaedic knowledge of Indian and Vendantic learning. He was the greatest translator of Buddhist scripture from Sanskrit into Chinese, and it was largely owing to his efforts and influence that Buddhist religious and philosophical ideas were disseminated in China. Following many years of study in Kucha and Kashmir, he arrived in Chang'an (now Xi'an), in 401 with a great reputation. He became known as "teacher of the nation." There, he headed a fa ... Numerous woodcuts in the text. 80; 68 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, stitched as issued. [China]: Xishan wen chang gong, 1844. The teachings of the Taoist deity Wenchang, sometimes known as the "God of Literature," as given in his Tract of the Quiet Way, is a guide to the conduct of life and ethical behavior. This ancient text is one of the three most important Taoist Holy Scriptures for advising the good, along with Lao-Tzu's Treatise on the Response of the Tao and Holy Emperor Guan's True Scripture to Awaken the World. The commentaries by Zheng Yan (15th century) and Zhenguan Huang (active 1713-55) were first published in 1777 but without illustrations. Our edition contains a series of fine woodcuts with depictions of karma on the lower half of many of the pages and text above. Wenchang's text is presented with the commentaries of Yan and Huang. 16 pp. (incl. wrappers). Small 4to (175 x 136 mm.), orig. white printed wrappers, staple-bound. [New York: 1966?]. The very rare first Something Else Press catalogue; not recorded in WorldCat. It opens with an article on book design and its limitations, as well as examples of attractive and structurally sound bookbindings. The article concludes: "We are not interested in built-in obsolescence. We want our books to be as fresh ten years from now as they are today, and as much of a joy to behold." This is followed by a listing of the press's publications, including works by Robert Filliou, Alison Knowles, Al Hansen, Dick Higgins, Ray Johnson, and Daniel Spoerri. In nice condition, lower wrapper with small stains. ❧ P. Frank, Something Else Press (1983), pp. 7 & 81. Not in BoBoAB. P. Woodcut frontis. 132 (incl. frontis.), iv pp. 12mo, fine modern black morocco, elaborately panelled in gilt, flat spine & inner dentelles gilt, a.e.g. London: Printed for J. Bew, 1781. "Eighth edition, corrected, and improved with an entire new set of cutts." First published in 1722, this is the most popular English conjuring book of the 18th century; more than twenty printings have been identified, and no doubt others have failed to survive. The text is heavily dependent on Reginald Scot's Discovery of Witchcraft (1584), and on subsequent derivative works, but the language has of course been adapted for a more modern readership. The author's identity has long remained something of a mystery, but an advertisement at the end of the fourth edition, published in the 1750's, suggests that Henry Dean may have been a dealer in magical apparatus, with a bookshop "near the Watch House on Little-Tower Hill, Postern Row." The very appealing 36 woodcut illustrations an ... Read more

Typographical device on title. Printed throughout in black letter. 11, [1] leaves. Small 4to, fine modern blue morocco, dentelles gilt, a.e.g. London: T. Purfoote, the assigne of R. Tottill, 1588. Fourth edition of one of the earliest English books of "secrets," or manual of practical arts; this text appears to be entirely of English origins. It was first published in 1573 and reprinted in 1581 and 1583; there were also editions of 1596 and 1605. All editions are very scarce; of this printing the NSTC (24255) records five copies: L18, O; F, PN, NY Metropolitan Museum. This is a very early English manual of instructions for painting and illuminating ("limming," or "limning"), particularly books and manuscripts. The following recipes are characteristic: "to temper golde or silver wherewith you may write with a pen or paint with a pencil"; "to temper Brasill wherewith to write, florish, or rule bookes"; "to make a kind of colouring called vernix, wherewith ... Japan: late Edo. A rare survival of a woodblock employed in the printing of a Japanese illustrated travel book from the late Edo period. The scene takes place in a famous pine forest in Hyogo prefecture (west of Kyoto), along Sumiyoshido, a pilgrimage route. In this forest, every three years, two groups of sparrows, one local, the other from a neighboring prefecture, would engage in a large aerial battle, a spectacle which attracted many tourists. The aristocrat (furthest to the right), wearing a hat characteristic of the nobility (eboshi), and highly decorated day-time attire (sokutai), is in the forest. His entourage, behind him, are dressed according to their rank. The man with long hair kneeling is very likely a young samurai sworn to protect the nobleman. The two men standing have especially detailed facial features. Fine condition.
