Description:
117 illus. (7 in color). 119 pp. & colophon. Large 4to, pictorial softcover (faint wear to the spine), title on spine. Stuttgart: Max-Ulrich Hetzler, 1983. The scarce catalogue for a group exhibition of paintings by Martin Kippenberger, Werner Büttner, Albert Oehlen, and Markus Oehlen. Koch estimates the edition at ca. 500-800 copies. "The straightforward, reduced concept is striking. Each artist was allocated one chapter, introduced by a portrait, and showing reproductions of paintings with captions. All the illustrations are set at the upper edge of the type area, in keeping with the cover layout. There are no commentaries, biographies or exhibition lists."-Koch. In near fine condition. WorldCat records a handful of copies in North America. ❧ Uwe Koch, ed., Annotated Catalogue Raisonné of the books by Martin Kippenberger 1977-1997 (2003) 16.

Black & white illus. throughout. 32 pp. 8vo, yellow pictorial wrappers, staple-bound. Seattle: Nine One One & The Real Comet Press, 1984.<br /> <P> Very rare exhibition catalogue of artists' books. Curated by Clive Phillpot, Jill Medvedow, and Laura Millin, the show was simultaneously staged in four public locations around Seattle.<br /> <P> From the Introduction by Medvedow: "It is my experience that people do not go to a gallery to read. So, when Nine One One, a contemporary arts and resource center, received a grant to organize an exhibition of artists' books, I was determined to find a way to place the books publicly, reach new audiences and test the validity of the premises upon which book art rests. I decided to situate the books in public waiting rooms in downtown Seattle and finally chose the Belltown Department of Health and Social Services (Welfare), the Metrocenter at the YMCA, a local organization providing community assistance and support, The…

Founded by Dick Higgins, the press published and distributed an array of innovative American and European artists' books. This catalogue opens with an article on book design and its limitations, as well as examples of attractive and structurally sound bookbindings. The article concludes: "We are not interested in built-in obsolescence. We want our books to be as fresh ten years from now as they are today, and as much of a joy to behold." This is followed by a listing of the press's publications (with several photographs of the artists), including works by Robert Filliou, Alison Knowles, Al Hansen, Dick Higgins, Ray Johnson, and Daniel Spoerri.<br /> <P> In near fine condition, spine a little sunned. <br /> <P> ⧠P.…

Oblong 4to (205 x 315 mm.), orig. three-color silk-screened dust-jacket (minor wear to the extremities), stiff boards, saddle-stitched & case-bound. Rochester, NY: Visual Studies Workshop Press, 1977.<br /> <P> First edition. This is an excellent demonstration of Keith A. Smith's virtuosity with the manipulation of photographic processes to create intricate and vivid imagery. One of Smith's frequent motifs, a "tumbling block" quilt pattern, appears several times in this work. In the 60s and 70s, the artist experimented with adding images to quilts by photo silk-screen, etching printed directly onto cloth, and even gum bichromate. The present book was printed at the Visual Studies Workshop Press; this is the regular edition of 300 copies. A special edition of 50 copies from the same year comes with a tipped-in photoetching as the frontispiece.<br /> <P> In 200 Books, Smith (b. 1938)…

Description:
19 joined sheets, mostly 23 columns per sheet, 17 characters per column. Scroll (263 x 8301 mm. & front endpaper 230 mm.), wooden roller. [Nara: 12th-14th century]. A fine, early printed sutra, which we are unable to date. It is clearly a kasuga-ban, printed on highest-quality thick paper (gampi or mulberry fibers), with bold, thick strokes, using black sumi ink, typical of kasuga-ban printings, a term for publications of the Nara monasteries in general. The Mahaprajnaparamitasutra is a massive compilation of scriptural literature said to have been preached by the Buddha in four different places to 16 discrete assemblies. It includes seminal works such as the Prajnaparamita in One Hundred Thousand Lines and the Diamond Sutra. "This recension of the scripture is only extant in a Chinese translation made in six hundred rolls by Xuanzang and his translation team between the years 660 and 663. Xuanzang's recension is by far the largest of all the prajnaparamita scriptures in the Chinese Buddhist…

Description:
40 parts in 12 vols. 8vo, orig. brown wrappers, new stitching. [China]: Liang yi tang, 1763. A rare edition of this anthology of early Chinese writings, collected by Han Yu 韓愈 (766-824), a major figure in the history of Chinese literature, comparable in stature to Dante, Shakespeare, or Goethe in their respective literary traditions. He was among that small group of writers whose works not only became classics of the language - required reading for all those with claims to literacy in succeeding generations - but whose writings redefine and change the course of the tradition itself. Although Han Yu is best-known as a prose stylist - the master shaper of the so-called ku-wen style - he was a stylistic innovator in the many genres in which he wrote, including poetry. And he was a major influence on the literary and intellectual life of his time, an important spokesman for a rejuvenated traditionalism that later emerged as Sung Neo-Confucianism. -The Indiana Companion to Traditional Chinese…

Description:
Tibet: [late 19th-early 20th cent.]. Our woodblock was carved to print two leaves in pothi format, common for Tibetan books. It contains no Chinese sigla, which are sometimes seen in Tibetan books printed in China. "The rise of printing in Tibet was an event of the utmost importance for Tibetan cultural and intellectual life. A major canonical collection is not known to have been printed until 1411, when that first Kangyur was printed with Ming imperial patronage. Yet printing had been used for Tibetan language publications centuries before. The earliest Tibetan language wood-block print currently known is a small prayer printed in Khara Khoto in 1153, and the earliest datable major Tibetan work currently known was printed in China under Mongol patronage no later than the 1270s." The links between Tibetan printing and that of neighboring states (Khara Khoto being the Tangut capital) are thus obvious. Meanwhile, "it was not until the beginning of the fifteenth century, in 1418, that block…
