Nearly 1.3 million people were displaced and more than 300 miles of the Yangtze River Valley were submerged by the reservoir behind the dam. This volume is the result of 8 trips to the region made by author and photographer Linda Butler between 2000 and 2003. Autographed by Linda Butler on the half title page.

Published for the first time from the family papers in the Bancroft Library. "C" was Carrie LeConte herself, "D" her friend Winonah Dibble. In later years Carrie LeConte was noted for her contributions to Brother Cornelius' biography of William Keith. Carrie met and fell in love with Keith when she was 18 and he a married man in his 40's, and she maintained a lifelong, though unrequited relationship with the noted painter.
